A solar panel array now adorns the roof of the White House and will produce an elephantine amount of solar power when the sun is actually shining: 6.3 kilowatts.

If 6.3 kilowatts sounds like a lot of energy, it isn’t. The average home consumes 27 kilowatts of power each day. Far more than the 6.3 kilowatts that will be produced by the new solar panels adorning the White House. According to TradeWind Energy, “one 50-watt light bulb running for 20 hours will use one kilowatt-hour of electricity (50 watts x 20 hours = 1,000 watt-hours = 1 kWh).”

In other words, the White House installed enough solar panels to power six 50-watt bulbs for 20 hours each day.

No price for the installation??  Bet me it cost five times what it should have, and solar is bloated expensive anyway....

First of all, this administration is known to compulsively lie so there is no reason to believe the 6 bulbs is accurate.  They probably inflated the number of bulbs by at least half which means 3 may be the real number.

Price should be of no issue when you are trying to do the right thing, trying to be a good example.

The panels will be a continuing cost. There are a lot of trees near the WH. Any leaves or pollen they shed will have to be cleaned off the panels.
The WH is also is in the middle of a city, so the dirt and soot will also have to be cleaned off regularly. Maybe if there's global warming, they won't have to worry about snow and ice on them but that's also a potential problem.

What's that turn out to be? 3 full time jobs to make sure that 6 light bulbs work?  And only during the day?

You can't buy 50-watt light bulbs in this country anymore. Now you have those LED's and CFL's being forced on us... which use a fourth of the energy. So it's more like 20 13-watt light bulbs, all day, every day.

For lighting, that's workable. For everything else, not so much. Electronics still eat up lots of energy, and heating/cooling as well.
