Bob Dylan charged in France over Croatia remarks
« on: December 03, 2013, 10:08:51 pm »
I saw the story about what Dylan said yesterday but decided it wasn't all that interesting except for the irony that Dylan was being accused of hateful comments (or whatever the Left is worked up about). Now, however, charges have been filed in France and the story has become more compelling.

PARIS (AP) — French authorities have filed preliminary charges against Bob Dylan over a 2012 interview in which he is quoted comparing Croatians to Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan.

The charges of "public insult and inciting hate" were filed against the musician in mid-November, Paris prosecutor's office spokeswoman Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre said Tuesday.

They stem from a lawsuit by a Croatian community group in France over remarks in an interview in Rolling Stone magazine in September 2012.

Speaking about race relations in the United States, Dylan was quoted as saying: "If you got a slave master or Klan in your blood, blacks can sense that. That stuff lingers to this day. Just like Jews can sense Nazi blood and the Serbs can sense Croatian blood."

A lawyer for the Croatian group, Ivan Jurasinovic, said it is not seeking monetary damages but wants Dylan, "a singer who is liked and respected in Croatia, to present an apology to the Croatian people."

He said the Croatian community in France was upset by the remarks, but said he did not know why Croatians in Croatia or the United States, where Rolling Stone is based, have not filed similar suits. France, home to about 30,000 Croatians, has strict laws punishing hate speech and racist remarks.

Representatives for Dylan, who performs in France regularly, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The charges were filed two days before Dylan received a French government honor at the Culture Ministry Nov. 13 but were not publicly confirmed until this week.

Speaking in generalities:  Croatians are mostly Catholic. Serbs are Orthodox Christian. Bosnians are Muslim.

The Balkans have always been complicated and confusing.

The Croatians (Ustache) collaborated with the Nazis in committing atrocities against Serbs. (Keep in the mind the Nazis killed a few million Serbs at the same time they were annihilating 6 million or so Jews). Some Serbs (Partisans) supported the Soviets during WWII. Other more nationalistic Serbs fought for their own homeland (the Chetniks) and ended up battling both the Soviets and the Nazis at various times.  The Chetniks famously rescued some 500 American airmen shot down over the Balkans in WWII.

And were brutally betrayed by us after the war ended in favor of the Communist Tito.

Truth is [or should be] an absolute defense. The Croatian Ustasha[the Croatian Fascist movement that ruled in Croatia from 1941 to 1944] murdered Slavs by the thousands. they were so brutal, they were written up at least twice for brutality to prisoners. By the SS.

So let me get this straight... the Croatians are upset about something an American said... in an American magazine... and are attempting to put him on trial... in France?

Uhh... I'm not sure there's jurisdiction there.

I'm with Bob.

Call a spade a spade, or call a Croat a Nazi atrocity committing collaborator.

At age 72, I expect Bob Dylan probably doesn't care a twit about all this.

Besides the weather is beautiful at his Malibu California home, this time of year.
