I am fence sitting on this one. Not a comfortable place to be.

You're "on the fence" about schools telling parents that they can't send lunch to school with their kids, and that the kids have to eat whatever the school provides?  Mmmmmkay...

Yep. It is called having seen it first hand and being honest.

Try it some time. Very refreshing.

Exactly, but I don't think it's about children eating a nutritious meal in the first place. It's simply about control. If you children don't eat Moochelle's approved arugula and jicama lunch, then you'll just have to starve, you ungrateful little  wretches!

Michelle is just like her husband when it comes to control.  She started out with the exercise program which was a great idea, but then somehow became the leading authority on school lunches.  Phew!

And the many worst parts (as if there can be a "worse" part); kids are getting more obese with these school lunches, kids learn to be dependent on the government for their daily bread and the kids really don't like this slop.
Why?  Well, because I'm a bastard, that's why.

Dang, Navy - that is barely even a snack! Especially for a boy who is probably burning 20,000 calories a day just at recess!

Seriously - nachos for lunch?

These schools don't have recess.

Too dangerous for the delicate, soft, gullible, useless children they're trying to produce en masse
Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

Olivia - take this the right way, please? Sorry, I am tired and really sad and heading to a funeral in the morning, so might be a little brusque.

What is the difference? Mandating exercise or mandating healthy eating? From this end, they both look exactly the same. One of the democrat assholes - I can't remember who off hand - said your kids are not your kids.

That is truth. They are not yours. You just get the joy and pleasure of them for a very short time. Then they pull away like a damned rocket, leaving you behind to watch with fondness and love. Sometimes - if you are really lucky - you get to borrow other kids for a bit. Pass on a few words. Watch for them, worry about them, protect them. Then they are gone.

We all want what is best for children. If you are missing that impulse then the problem is in the mirror (and yeah - you are most definitely not). Should kids exercise? Yep. They should run, fall, skip, fight, be blurs in the playground or the park. Should they eat well? Hell yes! You don't grow muscle, strong bone and elastic joints on KFC!

There are parents who consider their kids something between a paycheck and a particularly annoying pet. A heck of a lot of them - sad to say - will listen to Michelle Obama, because of her skin color. Some do good whitey tries it, forget it. So - this once - I am cutting a little slack. Yes, her diet is terrible. Kids don't want to eat their peas. It is neither imaginative or fun, terribly prescriptive and over controlling.

It is better than the alternative. I have seen the alternative. It ain't pretty.

My kids were all very healthy and through grade school rarely if ever ate at school they didn't like school food. I sent home made lunches that they loved. In high school they would check the menu and only buy a lunch if they liked what was served about one day a week usually otherwise they fixed their own lunches and took them to school. My kids were in sports at least 3 a year sometimes 4 with outside of school sports like soccer and wrestling in grade school in high school usually 3 sports a year. They all wore slims and were just fine thank you as my grandchildren are now. They are not forced to eat school food and once again I doubt they would my grandkids like my kids choose when to eat at school. We paid the doctor bills the schools don't so we should be the ones to oversee their nutritional needs. I know in low income areas some people don't feed their kids right and are considered to be stupid but that is a low number of students in most school districts and they have free lunches available to them. No way should schools be allowed to dictate to parents who are raising their children without any government help. In my day and my children's day schools were run locally and not dictated to by the federal government. I think the federal government is causing most problems these days along with all the dopey liberals.

Ketchup?  on STEAK??? wash your mouth out with soap... I don't even use steak sauce.

If I'm in a restaurant that even ask if I would like ketchup or steak sauce, then I know its going to be bad.  A clue to change my mind and order a burger before it's too late.

I've never understood why people insist on drowning out the amazing taste of a juicy steak.

Same. It is an insult to the cow, the farmer, the butcher and the cook. four insults for one choice - pretty good!

Like side sauces for the veggies, and yes, it mingles a bit. Can't be helped. But nothing beats the flavor of well raised rare steak, cut and cooked to perfection.

Thankfully right now in this country we are all allowed our own tastes. I love ketchup on my rare steaks always have and always will. I am not a big ketchup fan but do love it on some meats. I can enjoy a steak without it but prefer to use it.

Yuk!  It's a good thing people are different or else the world would be boring.

Saying that, there's No WAY I would eat a steak rare.  Medium well with Heinz sauce is the way to go.  My apologizes to the cow, cook and anyone else that might be offended.

It was a dark time. A dangerous time. The sun refused to shine and the moon was always new. The few fading stars struggled to muster the odd sparkle.

It was the time, referred to in hushed tones, with many a cautious glance over their shoulder, as the steak wars.

It started out innocently. The worst holocausts always do. An innocent post on a forum. Ketchup or not ketchup? Rare or medium? Agreement was obtained at first. Rare, and it's own juices only. Then the dissenting opinions started to appear. Medium well. Ketchup. One miscreant timidly suggested steak sauce and was rounded on by both sides with equal ferocity. It got brutal, fast.

That was a year ago. We few survivors carry on the war as best we can. We teach our children the rules and the rituals of the meat. The cows graze and laugh.

I no longer teach. I no longer have to visit parents while trying not to vomit at the stench of soiled diapers and the constant flea bites. I no longer need to be tooled up to take one of my ill students his homework, while his mother snores on the sofa in front of the TV. I no longer need to see the faces of despair and hardship looking at me from poorly mended uniforms every single morning.

You and your wife know how to raise your children. I expect that here and expect it of you. Some others do not. Should they be left in the dirt? Literally in many cases.

I think not.

I don't want my kids to depend on the government for their lunch because some other parents are terrible.  It's that sort of catering to the lowest common denominator that is ruining the public school system in the first place.  Just because there are terrible parents doesn't mean that my kids can't eat what makes them happy for lunch, IMO.

Completely agree.

Free lunches for kids whose parents neglect them, OK.

Making kids with good parents eat what might well be less nutritious lunches, NO.

Fair enough. Bit of a button issue for me, having worked with these poor sods for years. No hard feelings?

Catering to the lowest common denominator is exactly what it is. It is wrong. Sad and hopeless. But I haven't clue one what to do.

We're good, EC!  I feel strongly about it too, because I have a kid in the TAG program (Talented and Gifted) whose TAG classes now consist of lunches every other week to play board games with other TAG students.
