Sources: Pats to sign Tim Tebow

By Ed Werder | ESPN

The New England Patriots will sign Tim Tebow, league sources told ESPN.

The Patriots are signing Tebow, who is expected to participate in the team's mandatory minicamp Tuesday, as a quarterback, according to sources.

The move reunites Tebow with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who was the Broncos' head coach when Denver traded into the first round to draft the Heisman Trophy winner in 2010.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick often has spoken with admiration for Tebow's versatility, intelligence and character. Belichick covets what he has described as tough, smart, versatile football players.

ESPN also said, just a few days ago, that Tebow's career was over. Whoops.

It may be.  Belichek already has a back-up QB (Millet), so Tebow  will be a third-stringer, if he stays at QB.

He's big enough to convert to TE.

Of course, along with the questions comes the sideshow that is Tebow.

Tebow is a team player.
Belichek is very good at handling high profile situations.
Both Gronk and Hernandez are hurt.
Tebow will be a TE, that's my bet. TE seems to be a position that an athlete can pick up in short order. Think Antonio Gates. Gates played basketball for KSU and was a very good pro TE.

I expect this will work out well for all involved.

What about using him as a half-back?  He's big enough to stay behind to block also.

...but the lure is the option pass in motion.

It freezes the linebackers for sure.

Tebow is a mediocre passer and a lousy blocker. But he is strong, reasonably fast, with a great attitude. Belichek knows more than any of us, and he decided it was worth the risk. It will be fun to see how it plays out. I expect to see Tebow at TE almost exclusively, with a wrinkle of putting him in the slot from time to time.
