--- Quote ---There has been a large explosion in the centre of the Afghan capital, Kabul, followed by heavy gunfire.

The blast was near the hospital of Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security intelligence agency, police told the BBC.

"We are dealing with a well co-ordinated attack," said Kabul police chief Gen Ayub Salangi. "Afghan forces will deal with them."

It is not known if there are casualties.

Reports say smoke was seen over the centre of the city and the blast was felt several kilometres away.

Part of Kabul was cordoned off.

Shopkeepers in the area said the blast had shattered their windows.

A report by AFP news agency quoted witnesses as saying there were two blasts, the second much more powerful than the first.

Not excepted. Rated as breaking, so the story will be updated as more comes in.

Just another day in Paradise, eh?
