Biden: 'Disappointing,' but at least jobs were added in March

Vice President Joe Biden offered a positive spin Friday on the March jobs numbers, saying he's glad that the economy is still adding jobs.

“The economy is now add[ing] private sector jobs every month. Disappointing this month, but they nonetheless added jobs," he said during a speech to the Export-Import Bank's conference in Washington. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday that the economy created a lower-than-expected 88,000 jobs  last month.

Later, when discussing the outlook for American trade, Biden noted -- as he often does -- that he's "the White House optimist."

The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid rose to a four-month high last week, although the increase partly reflects seasonal distortions around the spring holidays.
 
The number was higher than expected and though there is volatility in the figure at this time of year it follows other reports this week that the labor market may be starting to weaken.
 
The Labor Department says weekly applications increased 28,000 to a seasonally adjusted 385,000. That is the highest level since late November.

There is a bright spot in the March jobless numbers, if government is your line of work.
 
The unemployment rate for civilian government workers dropped to 3.6 percent in March from 3.8 percent in February, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
 
In February, there were 828,000 unemployed federal, state and local governments in the United States. In March, that declined to 786,000.
 
In July 2012, the unemployment rate for government workers was as high as 5.7 percent, according to the BLS, and the rate has been in a steady decline since.  The current unemployment for government workers at 3.6 percent is the lowest rate since April 2011.
 
Since July, times have been very good for government in the United States, with governments managing to add 618,000 workers to their payrolls.  In March, there were 20,633,000 total government workers in the U.S.  In July the government employed 20,015,000 people.
