These Two New Polls Are Absolutely Brutal For Obama And His Convention
Grace Wyler   | 3 minutes ago

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  — As Democrats prepare to fete Barack Obama here at the Democratic National Convention, two new polls show the president could be in serious trouble with voters in the event's home state.

The first poll, conducted by Elon University for the Charlotte Observer and the Raleigh News & Observer, shows Obama trailing Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, 43 percent to 47 percent. The poll was conducted from Aug. 25 to Aug. 30, during the Republican National Convention.

The second, from the left-leaning Public Policy Polling, shows the President and Romney tied with 48 percent each. That poll was conducted from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2, just after the GOP convention.

The polls indicate that if Romney can sustain his momentum, North Carolina could be one of the easier swing states for Republicans to pick up in 2012. Obama won here in 2008 by just over 14,000 votes.

Democrats hope that by holding the convention in North Carolina, they may be able to regain some of the 2008 excitement. But Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx conceded Monday that it will still be an uphill battle for the President here.

"North Carolina was tight in 2008; it'll be tight this year," he told reporters at a convention press conference. "I don't think this will be an easy state to win, but it is a state that the president absolutely can win."

Republicans, meanwhile, are confident that any convention boost will be short-lived.

"This is one of the states we feel really good about," RNC communications director Sean Spicer told Business Insider Monday. "Any time you can hold a convention in an area it's nice, but I think they've had some serious issues…I think there's also a lot of disappointment and concern."

I don't think either North Carolina or Missouri are really in play in 2012.  Romney will take them both.  Florida is also starting to look like it's locked up for Romney.  It's all about Virginia and Ohio.  There are some other possible paths for R-Squared but VA and OH look like the easiest path to the presidency.
