Who Can ID This Aircraft?
« on: April 24, 2012, 02:38:27 am »
Flying about 35,000 feet over Dallas.  I was waiting on the next aircraft to depart DFW, so I saw this overhead and took a shot of it; 400mm just isn't enough to get a great shot.

Now, I've figured it out, but I want to see if any one else here can do it.  There are 4 things which give away what it is.

A Boeing 707?

Yes, sorta, but it's not civilian, which is what the 707 technically is.

Nope

It's a 707 airframe. Easiest way to tell this is the HF antenna sticking forward from the top of the vertical tail.  However, it is not civilian.

Hint: It is not a KC-135 Stratotanker

Closer, but no radar dome above it.

All out of service.

What gave it away to me is that it is using CFM-56 engines and the pods on the wingtips.  Only one type of military aircraft has both and lacks any additional addons.

I'm an old Air Force kid. ;-)  My dad was in both the Conn. ANG and USAF in Korea. I could identify most common commercial and military a/c by the time I was 10.
