The Reverend Sharpton Reports
August 10, 2011

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Al Sharpton.  Audio sound bite number one. (sigh) Al, let me just tell you: As a highly trained broadcast specialist, stick to activism and the bullhorn.  This is proving to be a tough transition for Reverend Sharpton, and I want you to listen to this last night.  This is Al Sharpton filling in for the -- I guess this guy is still there, Cenk Uygur.  The rumor is that Sharpton's gonna get this guy's show.  He's been filling in for how many months?  Two or three.  There's still, I guess, assessing Sharpton here.  Here is Al Sharpton reporting on the Wisconsin recall for MSNBC...

SHARPTON:  Tonight is the measure of whether the country begins, in the state of Wisconsin, a national drive to push back or whether we have more to go to build a movement of resistance.  But resist we much... We must and we will much... about ... that ... be committed.

RUSH:  All right, now, what happened here is obvious. What happened here is obvious.  Somebody is sabotaging the Reverend Sharpton via the teleprompter.  Can be the only thing to explain this.  The Reverend Sharpton is an extemporaneous preacher, he's an extemporaneous protester.  When Reverend Sharpton goes out there with the bullhorn, there's no teleprompters or cue cards or any of that, but once you get on television, they put everything on teleprompter.  He read it just like they had it up there, and it made no sense to him as he was reading it, but he still read it. The sad thing is, it probably made perfect sense to the audience of MSNBC.  That's the sad thing.
So here we go again. Now that you know what happened.... (interruption) Well, it's either a racist teleprompter or whoever is preparing the teleprompter is racist or somebody is sabotaging. Look, there are a number of black accredited certified journalists who are really ticked off that the Reverend Sharpton is up for this gig. You know, it's sort of like real-live sports journalists who get ticked off that athletes who have never played the media game, the jockocracy, end up in the broadcast booth or at the analyst desk. Meanwhile, they're out there sweating and slaving in the small markets, trying to climb the broadcast ladder.

Here's Sharpton from the protest march in the fundraising podium straight over to the MSNBC studio, and all the black journalists say, "Wait a minute, what about us?" and they have a legitimate complaint. One of them, some of 'em mighta gotten together try to sabotage here Sharpton because this, again... (interruption) What's the question? Okay. Official program observer, Mr. Snerdley with a question. Quick, what is the question? (interruption) We know he can read because why else say what he said? He had to be reading that. He had to be. Here it is again.

SHARPTON: Tonight is the measure of whether the country begins, in the state of Wisconsin, a national drive to push back or whether we have more to go to build a movement of resistance. But resist we much... We must and we will much... about ... that ... be committed.

RUSH: That's right. "...and we much about that be committed. We much, resist we much." And as I say, the audience probably understood every syllable.

RUSH: This again is Al Sharpton. With the help of Reverend Sharpton, we have a new motto here at the EIB Network: "Resist We Much!"  I'm sure we'll have a great graphic at RushLimbaugh.com later today to illustrate our new motto, "Resist We Much!"  This is Reverend Sharpton last night filling in for Cenk Uygur on MSNBC reporting on the Wisconsin recall election.

SHARPTON:  Tonight is the measure of whether the country begins, in the state of Wisconsin, a national drive to push back or whether we have more to go to build a movement of resistance.  But resist we much... We must and we will much... about ... that ... be committed.

RUSH: Folks, "Resist we much ... and when -- and -- and we much about that be committed."  So obviously somebody -- I don't think there's any doubt, it's wonderful two things, there's either total illiteracy and incompetency at MSNBC among people who write for the teleprompter, or there's sabotage of the Reverend Sharpton's chances to get this gig? The question is: Did somebody screw up Sharpton's prompter on purpose?  There's lots of grumbling in the journalism community that qualified black journalists were passed over in place of the Reverend Sharpton getting, what is it? It's a three-months tryout for this gig, or two month, however long it's been.  Last Sunday on CNN's Reliable Sources the host Howard Kurtz interviewed St. Petersburg Times media critic Eric Deggans, and Kurtz says, "Al Sharpton on the verge of getting the MSNBC job. He'd be the first African-American with a nightly show on cable news in years, and yet he's not a journalist. He's a liberal activist. He's former candidate.  What do you say to that?"

DEGGANS:  Exactly.  And I think that's something -- that's what worries, uh, some black journalists, you know. We have been pushing hard to try and have diversity, particularly in cable news primetime.  We don't have a person of color who's really hosting a show on any of the major, uh, cable news channels in primetime, and to have that one slot go to someone who's more of an activist and not a journalist.

RUSH:  Yeah, it just doesn't sit well. It's not sitting well. (interruption)  You mean her?  Tamara...? What is her last name? Tamara Hall?  Tamron Hall Tamron Hall.  Tamron Hall. Resist We Much! (interruption) Why don't they give it to her?  Maybe she doesn't want to work nights. (interruption) Will you stop and think about this now?  That's quite a statement.  I mean, here we are the socially conscious, the race conscious, left-wing media, and not one African-American primetime host or hostette in all the lineups? (interruption) That's what I'm saying: There's nothing new about that. That's my whole point.  But these are the people supposedly have all the sensitivity, they're the people that aren't the racists. They're the people that don't look at people, see color and orientations and stuff like that.  (laughing)

That's right, "diversity," I know.  "Focus on diversity."  Well, whatever.  Resist We Much!

RUSH: Now, we as you know, ladies and gentlemen -- I, speaking personally -- have a great love and affection for the broadcast business. I want everybody who enters it to represent it well. I want everybody who is in broadcasting to be a credit to the industry. I don't want it to have a poor reputation. That's why I cringe when people with no experience are given jobs. That's why I cringe when psychologists are given radio shows and they've never done it before or what have you, and I have a long record of this.  The Reverend Sharpton, what does he bring to this game? What, really, in terms of broadcast experience and talent? What does he bring? (interruption) No, well, radio, but... (sigh) You know, more people voted for him for president than listen to his radio show.

No, the Reverend Sharpton's area of expertise is the protest march, and when Reverend Sharpton appears on MSNBC, it just sounds flat.  There's something missing.  It's not the Al Sharpton everybody is familiar with.  So we have, in an effort to help, run a little filtering on that Al Sharpton sound bite where somebody sabotaged his teleprompter. If he would try this, maybe he would have more luck.

SHARPTON:  (megaphone filtering)  Tonight is the measure of whether the country begins, in the state of Wisconsin, a national drive to push back or whether we have more to go to build a movement of resistance.  But resist we much... We must and we will much... about ... that ... be committed.

RUSH: You see? It sounds better.  Regardless what's (ahem) said, it's a little bit more dynamic, a little bit more dynamism to it.
