At the time Bill de Blasio was running for re-election in New York City the nation was going through a spasm of tearing down confederate monuments. Bill de Blasio, being a good little cultural Marxist, set up a commission to check the political correctness of the hundreds of statutes and monuments that dot the city. There was even a threat of tearing down the iconic statue of Christopher Columbus located in Columbus Circle. Now, it was personal.
Individuals like the cardinal of NYC, and civic groups, including the Knights of Columbus, loudly registered their displeasure at this idea.
Well, someone must have gotten to de Blasio and reminded him that, in a city of millions with Italian ancestry and a rather large annual Columbus Day parade, removing Christopher Columbus would be the kiss of death for any politician – not even a democrat would be immune from fallout.
Well, after that, we never heard another word from the commission. And of course de Blasio went on to win re-election.
