The U.S. Military Once Had Nukes That Could Fit in a Backpack
Soldiers trained to carry “special atomic demolition munitions†thought they were readying for suicide missions.

They called them “special atomic demolition munitions,†otherwise known as SADMs. What they really amount to were nukes small enough to fit in a backpack.
The U.S. Army and Marine Corps had dozens of these small nukes during the Cold War, and an elite group of soldiers, Marines, and sailors trained to infiltrate enemy lines and use these weapons against important enemy targets—probably frying themselves in the process. The Associated Press just interviewed a veteran of the U.S. Army’s Special Atomic Demolition Munition platoons to find out what it was like to live with the B54 tactical nuclear warhead.
