Why Hasn’t Trump Folded?

Since taking office, the president has often blinked during difficult negotiations. His surprising decision to hold firm now has made this the longest shutdown in history.

Saturday marks the 22nd day of the government shutdown, the longest closure in American history. And with neither Democrats nor the White House budging from their positions, and the president threatening to keep the government closed for months or years, there’s no end in sight.

Which is all the more remarkable in light of how the shutdown began—or rather how it almost didn’t. As the nation approached the end of government funding in late December, President Donald Trump was on the verge of giving in. Then he reversed course, announced he’d shut down the government, and hasn’t blinked since. Why has Trump decided to hold firm this time, and what does it mean for the likelihood of a deal?

Or he is trying to keep a primary campaign promise and as a twofer trying to prevent the gangs, drugs and criminals from getting into the USA. Perspective is an amazing thing, hard to believe two people could look at the same events and come to two entirely different conclusions.

Right.  And it suddenly became important after he lost the House and couldn't pass.  Sounds like the perspective of an apologist, or someone who really thought the GOP would repeal and replace Obamacare, lock up hillary, or drain the swamp..

Why? Who knows? But, I think that like every other responsibility Trump’s taken on – like navigating a foreign bureaucracy and labor force to build a hundred story luxury tower in Istanbul or Mumbai, or hosting a long running reality show or running for president for that matter. It’s his project that he agreed to complete when he accepted the job. He’s had a long career of getting big projects done. We’re not talking about Obama here.

I don’t think that people who have accomplished big things are the type to just give up on their goals.

He has nothing to fold on. He could give up his demands for a wall, but then where would that leave American border security.  He could agree to the opening of the government, but he can’t do it unilaterally because congress hasn’t appropriated funds to do that. Has nothing to do with stupidity, unless you’re talking about San Fran NaN and Chucklehead Schumer.
