Carlin also knew the truly important truths:

Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle . . .

. . . Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying . . .

. . . Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice . . .

. . . Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.

. . . Baseball has no time limit: we don't know when it's gonna end - might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death . . .

. . . In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.

And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:

In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home. And to be safe.

He also could have mentioned that football has the Super Bowl, halftime shows, marching bands, a ball that isn't even shaped like a ball, and the Oakland Raiders, while baseball has the World Series, curve balls (and the balls are shaped like balls!), knuckleballs, screwballs, the most creative and intensified rivalries in sports, and the best nicknames in sports, including but not limited to . . .

** When Joe Pepitone was traded from the Yankees to the Astros, he got one gander at the Astrodome and called it the world's biggest hair dryer.

*** When 1930s Tiger pitcher Elden Auker was part of the closing ceremonies for Tiger Stadium, a newspaper headline in his home city read: AUKER SAYS GOODBYE TO OLD GIRL. His maid panicked and asked his wife how long Auker was having an affair!

Especially in his early years, before he became just a grumpy old man. I could still listen to any of his albums from Takeoffs and Put-Ons (which has the original "Wonderful WINO" routine!) through A Place for My Stuff.

Carlin on Politicians

“Now, there's one thing you might have noticed I don't complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It's what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain't going to do any good; you're just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it's not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here... like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There's a nice campaign slogan for somebody: 'The Public Sucks. F*ck Hope.”

Was following up on @EasyAce 's noting that he became an angry old man late in his career.

Was wondering if you'd happen to have witnessed that kind of act.  That's all.

It was just a repeat of all the same stuff we've all already seen.  Nothing new.  But didn't come across as angry old man like you do.

Saw Carlin in Vegas a year or so before he died.  Some woman sitting near us -- possibly drunk or high -- started laughing and yelling at everything he said.  Unfortunately, Carlin thought it was my friend making the commotion and he said something nasty to her.  When my friend protested it wasn't her, he said "I don't give a f*** who it was."  Upset my friend who had been a huge fan.

IMO when it dawned on him that the left's collective sense of humor did not extend to the skewering of their own sacred cows.

Carlin also pointed out that baseball is played in a park.  Football is played only in a stadium.  The baseball field is a diamond. The football field is a gridiron.

It's like being a bit "off" is a prerequisite for being a good comedian.

Johnathan Winters, Lennie Bruce.

comedy ontheir broadcasts, that I recall.

But quick minds and wit, probably very high IQ, also seem to go with the territory.

Both Joe Rogan and Dave Rubin have done standup comedy. Among the top "podcasters" Neither does

When I was in college, 18 or so and before the Army got me, I ran the concerts and entertainment for the student association. We booked him for a date, I picked him up at the airport we went to a local radio station did an interview, and dropped him at hotel. Got a call from him a couple hours later, the TV in his room wasn't working and he wanted to watch the playoff's so I invited over to my house cause I knew my mother would be watching the games...I guess he figured in the middle of Montana that was the best offer he was going to get so he came over and Mumz and him spent the afternoon drinking beer and watching the games...

That night he gave a great performance and even did a little rant about no TV but good beer...

The gentleman was one of a kind...

Edit: Thinking back...after the concert we had a little party at local restaurant for all the people that were involved in putting on the show, he came, which was a bit unusual as most of the acts did not have time for that sort of thing, we all had good time.

I picked him up and took him to the airport the next morning. I didn't notice but apparently he slipped a couple of joints into my shirt pocket as a going away gift...couple of days latter Mumz found them and was ready to commit me to drug rehab. I figured they could only have come from George and eventually convinced her... :silly:
