I tuned in to Fox TV to watch Trump's Speech on Border Security anchored by none other than Shepard Smith ( and supported by Chris Wallace ).

I was hoping that Fox would at least give some balanced report on Donald Trump's speech unlike the other alphabet channel's pundits.

But just like that Shep Smith, just a few seconds after Trump finished his speech gave the following "refutation" (Note the quotes) of Trump's points ( I think Smith had already prepared his talking points having seen the contents of Trump's speech before hand ):

1) On average, the crime rate of illegals is LOWER than the crime rate of Americans and legal immigrants. It is unfortunate that

NO CRISIS AT THE BORDER.

2) For the past several years, the number of Mexicans moving back to Mexico EXCEEDS the number of Mexican illegals coming to the USA. In other words, illegal crossings are actually DOWN, not UP.

NO CRISIS AT THE BORDER.

3) Drugs like heroin or opioids do not mostly come in from our borders with Mexico but from other ports of entries. We should focus on those other port of entries, not waste billions of dollars building the wall.

NO CRISIS AT THE BORDER.

4) The number of illegal overstays in the USA far exceeds the number of illegal crossings at our borders. Trump is overemphasizing the border when he should be focusing on those illegal overstayers.

NO CRISIS AT THE BORDER.

5) Trump owns the shutdown because he himself said that he would be proud to own the shutdown. As this drags on for months, millions of people will be without their paychecks to pay for their day to day living.

OK, one thing I would like to request -- please refrain from remarks that say -- Shep Smith is a gay, liberal jerk. I already know how you feel about him.

I want to read your calm, rational, refutations of Shep Smith's arguments. Let's focus on his arguments and refute them.

The liberal talking point for gun control legislation is "If it even protects one life...." We we can be certain that it would have protected the lives of the 20+ American citizens killed by illegals in the last 122 months.
As for owning the shutdown. How can Trump own it when not a single piece of legislation has reached his desk for him to veto. Present him with a Democrat plan for him to veto then he can own it.
In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.-Woody Allen

@SirLinksALot

I would like to know where Shep got his stats on Nos. 1 through 4 cited above. I suspect those stats are bogus or have been bent to suit a particular meme.

Seems that Shep misses or deliberately ignores the main point -- that these invaders are here illegally and they are draining our already strapped resources which we, the taxpaying citizens of this country pay for.  We do not want or need any of them.

These are unsourced stats so they are probably fabricated.

1) On average, the crime rate of illegals is LOWER than the crime rate of Americans and legal immigrants. It is unfortunate that

Wrong. The crime rate of illegals far exceeds that of Americans. Smith is using a survey (flawed survey) that linked ALL immigrants to show that it is lower.

2) For the past several years, the number of Mexicans moving back to Mexico EXCEEDS the number of Mexican illegals coming to the USA. In other words, illegal crossings are actually DOWN, not UP.

Wrong. There is no proof available for this statement. Even pro-amnesty Pew can’t verify the number or repatriates, and I’m not aware of any epidemic killing off Mexicans in the US.

3) Drugs like heroin or opioids do not mostly come in from our borders with Mexico but from other ports of entries. We should focus on those other port of entries, not waste billions of dollars building the wall.

Wrong. That “fact” was based on the information that of drugs caught at the port of entry. It is unknowable how much else comes in at the rest of the border. We do know that the sum total of drugs have a Mexican origin

4) The number of illegal overstays in the USA far exceeds the number of illegal crossings at our borders. Trump is overemphasizing the border when he should be focusing on those illegal overstayers.

Wrong again. Different surveys state overstays as between 40 and 60 percent. But that is based on using the number of illegals also entering the country, a number which no one knows. Illegals sneaking in don’t report to the Census Bureau. Pew has come out with a number of illegal aliens of 11 million, static now for 15 years. They base it on a guess of how many are here based on how many are caught.

5) Trump owns the shutdown because he himself said that he would be proud to own the shutdown. As this drags on for months, millions of people will be without their paychecks to pay for their day to day living.

Boo Hoo. Feds, the best paid and most secure employees in the nation, have never missed a day’s pay over all their shutdowns. If they don’t know how to save for a rainy day, too bad.

Yes he is, but that's irrelevant to the discussion here. I'd like people to address his arguments.

And Trump did not shut down the government. The Democrats would not allow the Continuing Resolution to come to the Senate floor because it contained the money for the Wall. The Democrats shut down the government to keep Trump from getting the wall.

Thanks @SirLinksALot .  I figured the stats were not on the up and up.

Supposedly, Shep was fact checking.  But as the saying goes, who is fact checking the fact checkers?

About the shutdown -- I think all of them are to blame -- the president and congress, both parties.  If these knuckleheads would have sat down months ago and worked out a real budget, instead of continuing resolutions, spending bills and stopgap legislation, there would be no need for this or any other shutdown.

As I recall.... Trump caught a lot of flack (rightly so) over his last approval of that 6 mo. spending bill.  He said he did that in order to get military funding.   The "this is the hill to die/fight on" should have been back then, not now... now that the rats have the House.   But that's just me.

The only thing I know about Shepard Smith is that when he comes on the channel changes instantly.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

I quit watching him during his Katrina dramarage.  I don't understand how he stayed on TV after that disgraceful and dishonest coverage.
