Prime-time Trump faces credibility crisis
CNN, Jan 8, 2019

Washington (CNN) — President Donald Trump will face one huge obstacle when he appeals to Americans in a prime-time Oval Office address Tuesday to unite behind his crusade for a border wall: Himself.

Trump has spent years exploiting immigration -- one of the nation's most divisive fault lines -- during an insurgent campaign and a presidency sustained by the fervor of his committed political base.

But now, the downside of that strategy is becoming evident. In his attempt to convince the nation that a genuine crisis is unfolding at the southern border, the President's arguments face extreme skepticism from those not already in his camp.

The majority of Americans are against Trump on the wall and the shutdown
CNN, Jan 8, 2019

[...]

His second and smaller problem is that he is less popular than his main adversary, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. That's quite a feat given that congressional leaders (by virtue of leading an unpopular branch of government) are usually unpopular. This hurts his ability to potentially win the shutdown by making it a popularity contest between two politicians.

Of course, for a President who has been satisfied with being popular only among his base, Trump having only the support of Republicans may be all he needs to not give into Democrats during this shutdown. On the other hand, Democrats have no reason to give into Trump with the public on their side.

CNN to Air Democrat Response to Trump Oval Office Address
Breitbart, Jan 7, 2019

CNN is expected to air a live broadcast of the Democratic Party’s response to President Donald Trump’s first Oval Office address Tuesday evening.

CNN senior Congressional Correspondent Manu Raju reported CNN plans to “take the Democratic response live,” adding that it is currently unknown who will deliver the party’s rebuttal.

Despite earlier reports to the contrary, President Trump’s 9:00 PM EST address will be carried live by ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox Broadcasting, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, MSNBC, and NBC. It is unclear if the networks will join CNN in airing the Democratic Party’s response.

Trump didn't cause the shutdown. The Democrats voted against the Continuing Resolution.

Well, with me Trump faces a lack of interest crisis.  I haven't watched a president's speech since Obama.
