It would be a miracle if she makes it to next year. The bigger problem is who is verifying that she is still alive other than her staff? There should be someone independent checking on her at least once a month to verify that she is conscious and not brain dead from a stroke.

I wouldn't disagree. She can read the briefs and the transcripts of oral arguments and still be able to evaluate each side's arguments. There's no magic in being present, but that doesn't mean I think she should vote on a matter she didn't hear. Her absence makes it pretty clear (to me, anyhow) that she's in very bad shape, physically.

I agree with all you say.  If she were younger I would agree even more. She could make decisions based on arguments....but I can't believe she has that capacity at this point in her life.

Exactly.  She's had cancer before, she had a stent placed in 2014, she had just recovered from fractured ribs earlier this year and now she's recuperating from cancerous nodules being removed from a lobe of her lung.  The last several procedures have been in her 80's and I questioned the morbidity risk of her recent procedure.  Many times surgery isn't an option for someone her age.  The older a patient is undergoing surgery there is also a huge risk of cognitive decline.

My hunch is that we won't see her seated back on the bench, she will continue her leave of absence long enough for either 2020 to roll around in hopes that a DEM is seated, or she'll leave on a permanent vacation to the pearly gates.

Indeed.  For her to miss a SCOTUS argument for the first time is indicative of her health.  Cognitively she may be suffering (POCD) as well; anesthesia sometimes has negative affects on the elderly.

Yes, I think she's in bad shape, especially if the LibMedia is busy writing her life story in some sort of video beatification (preparatory to Sainthood). I would not wish her health problems on anyone, but await her successor at SCOTUS, hopefully an Originalist jurist.
