How Democracy Is Losing the World

If Donald Trump told Michael Cohen to pay hush money to Stormy Daniels about a one-night stand a decade ago, that, says Jerome Nadler, incoming chair of House Judiciary, would be an "impeachable offense."

This tells you what social media, cable TV and the great herd of talking heads will be consumed with for the next two years — the peccadillos and misdeeds of Trump, almost all of which occurred before being chosen as president of the United States.

"Everywhere President Trump looks," writes The Washington Times' Rowan Scarborough, "there are Democrats targeting him from New York to Washington to Maryland... lawmakers, state attorneys general, opposition researchers, bureaucrats and activist defense lawyers.

Will the elites that loathe him succeed in bringing Trump down, driving him from office, and prosecuting and putting him in jail?

I don't think so. I think its yet another media distraction. Trump won't go to jail. Other Presidents have done far worse without media coverage on their actions without impeachment and none that were brought to trial were impeached. Chances are low for impeachment on civil behavior that happened before he became President.

Vladimir Putin, an autocratic nationalist, has shown how a ruined nation can be restored to a great power in the eyes of its people and the world, commanding a new deference and respect.

Intriguing viewpoint of Putin. He does appear autocratic and rumors that he has amassed a fortune larger than $200 billion could only have been taken through autocratic means. I read a thousand times that Russia is an oligarchy, whatever that is. If royalist activity is the antidote to soviet socialism good for them. They probably view democracy as socialism-lite.

Democracy is a bus you get off when it reaches your stop

Nice reductionist thinking. And an Olympic medal is a coin for a VIP arcade. Democracy is the common citizens' protection from tyranny and dictatorship if you wanna get reductionistic but really its much more than that.

We are an unserious nation, engaged in trivial pursuits, in a deadly serious world.

I don't know what nation this writer is referring to but I don't live in a cartoon myself. Perhaps regional differences?
I won't accept.

Democracy has ALWAYS been a loser and our founders knew it and dismissed the idea of one out of hand. They gave us a REPUBLIC instead!

The Republic has been undermined since before the ink was dry on the Constitution by those who never wanted a Republican form of government in this country and sadly, it appears those forces have won.

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
