Russia sends bombers to Venezuela amid country's economic, humanitarian crisis

Dec 10, 2018,

Two Russian bombers landed in Caracas, Venezuela Monday amidst an economic crisis there that has left 3 million refugees in its wake and caused shortages of food and medical supplies.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said the Tu-160 bombers and two support aircraft landed at the Simon Bolivar International Airport on Monday. During the 6,200-mile flight, the ministry said the bombers were briefly escorted by Norwegian F-16s, presumably flying a NATO air police mission.

Kremlin scoffs at US criticism of bombers in Venezuela
« Reply #1 on: December 11, 2018, 11:48:09 am »

MOSCOW (AP) — The Kremlin has rejected U.S. criticism of Russian strategic bombers' deployment to Venezuela.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responded to Monday's arrival of a pair of Tu-160 nuclear-capable bombers in Venezuela by tweeting that "the Russian and Venezuelan people should see this for what it is: two corrupt governments squandering public funds, and squelching liberty and freedom while their people suffer."

Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, dismissed Pompeo's comment as "undiplomatic" and "inappropriate." He told reporters Tuesday that such criticism sounds odd from a country "half of whose military budget would be enough to feed the whole of Africa."

I know there are people here who are fanboys of Vlad Putin. Why should we trust Russia if they are doing s**t like this?

Great!  I woke up this morning and read this and it didn't exactly leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling, especially since I live in SWFL!

...the bombers are also capable of carrying nuclear-tipped cruise missiles with a range of 3,410 miles......

.............The bombers’ arrival in Venezuela came amid the increasing tensions between the U.S. and Russia, which recently escalated the war against the Ukraine after Russian forces in November shot at and seized three Ukrainian naval vessels and captured 24 sailors.....

.........Trump escalated the relationship with Venezuela last year after saying he wouldn’t rule out military action against Venezuela.

“We have many options for Venezuela and by the way, I'm not going to rule out a military option,” he said. “A military operation and military option is certainly something that we could pursue.”

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all…do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Just thinking out loud on Venezuela,

Those two MLB or former MLB players were killed down there, that's a great tragedy. They were according to articles, playing baseball (beisbol) in Venezuela:

Okay, so I wonder, as bad as Venezuela is right now, economically, they still have a baseball season? I guess that isn't a reach.

But, otoh, they were in essence, murdered by bandits. And to the Venezuelan police's credit, apparently, they have arrested a number of suspects in this. I believe 8 people is what I saw.  Okay, so such a heinous crime, makes me think of poverty there. Venezuela, since at least, Chavez came to power around 2000, has had a lot of crime, I believe Caracas has even been the murder capital of the world at one point.

Again, just some thinking-out-loud pondering on that country.
