Trial for border officer accused of lying about citizenship

A judge has set a Jan. 29 trial for a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer in southern Arizona accused of falsely claiming he was born in the United States.

Authorities say De la Garza claimed he was born in Texas, when he was actually born in Mexico.

Maybe things have changed, but used to be the FBI did a background check on everyone who applied for this type of position.  You know the kind where they talk not only to the references you list, but also your boss, your ex-boss, your neighbors, etc.  Seems like they would have sussed this little fact out before hiring him.
