Published Monday 19 November 2018
By Tim Newman
Fact checked by Paula Field
A perfect world sees the holiday season filled with love, warmth, and happiness. However, more often, it is crammed with stress, exhaustion, and panic. Here, we offer some advice on how to bring a little calm back to the festive season.

How can we avoid the stress of the festive season?

I know it seems hard to believe, but we are, once again, fast approaching the holiday season.

Although millions of people across the United States and beyond are looking forward to the festivities, it can sometimes leave people feeling jaded and exhausted.

Stress is self-inflicted. I refuse to believe that holiday activities rival being depth-charged in a submarine.

Avoid conversation with liberal relatives, and marinate your liver in C2H5OH.

Turn off your Givadam. People like to "drama up" during the holidays. You don't want to get sucked into their vacuum of joy. They'll just drag you into their dirty hole like a Trapdoor spider. If you can't get away from them, tell them to "turn that frown upside down". If you do that enough, you won't have to be around them.

Yes, I have friends who won't have a Merry Christmas because of the recent death of loved ones. But they aren't the ones despairing about Christmas out in the open.

Being the only NT'er in my family, I'm switching to heroin this year to cope this season.

We're in the process of a slow move, and we plan on taking the herd up right before Christmas.   :tree3:

At least now we can say Merry Christmas without getting the $hit kicked out of us, unless your wearing a MAGA hat, of course.

You have a standing invite to the Castle, whenever you want.  720 degrees of porch.  No shit kickin (I do have a nice pair of pointy-toe bull-hide (and Python).

How have a good time?  Lower your expectations and enjoy what you get?

 :pondering:

You ask a good question, not easily answered.  I'm a bit of a pessimist, and I generally have low expectations anyway.  But, so far, my life seems to be happy.

Well, if you have low expectations, you're not easily disappointed.  That can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on where you place those expectations.

If I may, I shall go off on a tangent.  I have found that less planning for holiday gatherings and  vacations, trips,  leads to very happy events and memories.  Impromptu  is the way to go.  Less disappointment if it doesn't meet your minds inflated expectations.  Planning every detail, every minute, hour, seating arrangement only brings disappointment.

Yep!  And you won't care if no one notices and appreciates how much effort you (didn't) put into the preparations.

I  have the expectation people will be the same. Since I already limit my interactions with people I doubt I will be disappointed any more than the usual.
