Mueller Recommends No Prison for Flynn, Citing Cooperation

 Tuesday, 04 December 2018 08:42 PM

President Donald Trump's former national security adviser provided so much information to the special counsel's Russia investigation that prosecutors say he shouldn't do any prison time, according to a court filing Tuesday that describes Michael Flynn's cooperation as "substantial."

The filing by special counsel Robert Mueller provides the first details of Flynn's assistance in the Russia investigation, including that he participated in 19 interviews with prosecutors. It was filed two weeks ahead of Flynn's sentencing and just over a year after he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations with the Russian ambassador on Trump's behalf.

Though prosecutors withheld specific details of Flynn's cooperation because of ongoing investigations, their filing nonetheless underscores the breadth of how much information Mueller has obtained from people close to Trump as the president increasingly vents his anger at the probe — and those who cooperate with it.

This week, Trump lashed out at his former legal fixer, Michael Cohen, saying he is making up "stories" to get a reduced prison sentence after his latest guilty plea to lying to Congress. Trump also praised longtime confidante Roger Stone for saying he would "never testify against Trump," adding in his tweet: "Nice to know some people still have 'guts!'"...

AG William Barr: "I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm that I subsequently joined for a period of time."

Alexander Acosta Labor Secretary resigned under pressure concerning his "sweetheart deal" with Jeffrey Epstein.  He was under consideration for AG after Sessions was removed, but was forced to resign instead.

In that case, Trump should pardon Flynn.

Remember when Trump freaked out over the Cohen office raid and said attorney-client privilege was dead? Now, he says Cohen is a liar and a weak person. Wait until he starts tweeting about having to fire Flynn, because he was a liar, despite previously repeatedly defending him in public.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

They are never a criminal to Trump as long as they don't sing.  Defending Trump is tiring.  Hardly a person in his early staff who isn't guilty of something.  That draining the swamp.  I think the swamp moved in.

Dershowitz recently said he believed the final Mueller report will be politically damaging, but not criminally significant.  The idea there was direct collusion between the campaign and foreign agents has always been preposterous.  Most likely, the investigation will reveal some very uncomfortable dealing with Russians regarding sanctions, in exchange for favorable financing terms for the Trump Organization, Kushner, and others via VTB, through Deutschebank. In 2017, Deutchebank was fined $10B for laundering Russian money.  A week ago, their offices were raided again, for activity related to the Panama Papers.

Camille Paglia had a good take on Trump's administration, especially in the early days.  I posted a column she wrote a couple of days ago.  Camille is a leftist (now struggling for a home) but one who has great insight and clarity.  She said in explaining the somewhat erratic behavior of Trump as a newly-elected President who had not previously been in politics:

"It’s partly because as a non-politician he arrived in Washington without the battalion of allies, advisors, and party flacks that a senator or governor would normally accumulate on the long road to the White House. Trump’s administration is basically a one-man operation, with him relying on gut instinct and sometimes madcap improvisation. There’s often a gonzo humor to it — not that the US president should be slinging barbs at bottom-feeding celebrities or jackass journalists, much as they may deserve it.
Against stupidity, the Gods themselves contend in vain.
