Mark Warner: Senate Intelligence Committee has 'made a number of referrals' to Mueller

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee said Sunday his panel has sent a number of referrals to special counsel Robert Mueller.

During an interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation," Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., vowed to ensure it is abundantly clear to anyone who testifies before Congress that it is a crime to lie.

"It signals one, that if you lie to Congress — and I was with our chairman, Chairman Burr, on Friday when he said, 'If you lie to Congress, we're going to go after you, we’re going to make sure that gets referred.' And we've made a number of referrals," Warner said of Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., when asked about the importance of Cohen's plea deal.

The comments from Warner came three days after Michael Cohen, President Trump's former longtime personal lawyer, pleaded guilty in a New York federal court to “knowingly and willfully" making "a materially false, fictitious and fraudulent statement and representation” to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees in 2017 about a Trump real estate project in Moscow.

"What we also know at this point is not only [was there] this ongoing business deal, but you had the president's son and his son-in-law meeting with Russians," Warner said. "We had the president's campaign aides being aware that there were the Hillary Clinton emails. We had the president’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort offering to brief Russian agents. There seems to be all of these past [incidences that] lead to ties with Russia, and Mr. Trump continues to deny any of that."

Despite his plea deal, Cohen could still face up to six months in prison. Cohen will also likely get prison time in connection to his guilty plea in August to eight counts of campaign finance violations, tax fraud, and bank fraud as part of a separate case brought by federal prosecutors in New York based on a referral from Mueller. Cohen is set to be sentenced for that matter on Dec. 12.
