NeverTrump Republicans have been rabidly obsessed since 2015 to prevent Donald Trump’s nomination, election, and having failed, to join the left in nonstop criticism and condemnation of President Trump. They may be succeeding, but to what end? As they look around at the current political landscape, are they truly happy with the direction of the country? Or is that irrelevant, as long as they can strut around on their high horse, feeling smug, telling each other “I told you so”?

The NeverTrump movement began shortly after Trump announced his candidacy for the presidency. So-called “principled Republicans” were incensed that a loud-mouth from Queens, a TV reality star, a host of beauty pageants, someone never before elected to public office, should challenge the Republican establishment orthodoxy.

His tweets and straight talk were unacceptable. Calling out the media and his political opponents ran against the grain of how they thought Republicans should handle themselves in a presidential campaign. Trump did not follow the proper and acceptable savoir faire of John McCain or Mitt Romney, two prominent NeverTrumpers. The fact that both lost their elections to an easily defeatable far-left candidate who damaged the country badly during his eight-year reign of “fundamentally transforming America” seems to be lost on Trump’s GOP critics.

The NeverTrump names are familiar. Aside from the two noted above, there are others, all one-time Republicans, although their conservative beliefs have been tossed out the window over political expediency or ego. George Will, Max Boot, Steve Schmidt, Bret Stephens, Jennifer Rubin, and anyone with the last name of Bush. There are many in Congress too – Paul Ryan, Jeff Flake, Ben Sasse, Bob Corker, and others.

   Imagine my disdain when the likes of bill kristol is propped up as a leader in the 'so called' Never movement it's as dubios as people trying to associate david duke (whom I regretfully campaigned for against Edwards) as having close ties with Trump.
   As one Briefer so astutely repeats, it's time for Trump to expand his base by making inroads to the Independents.

But the GOP Congress has not been rewarded for all this,  because the President insisted the midterm elections be a referendum on him.   We are now facing two years of investigations and obstruction by a radicalized and energized Democratic party.     

The question is what to do going forward. Why not listen to what the "NeverTrumpers" have to say,  and recalibrate things so we can recover and win again in 2020?   They have a point, you know, that the President IS polarizing, and now we have empirical evidence that such polarization loses elections, notwithstanding a robust and growing economy and record-low unemployment.   

What do we do now in response?   That is the only relevant question, and it seems to me that all Republicans of good will,  both the NeverTrumpers and those who feel there is no GOP without Trump,  need to be encouraged to sit at the table and discuss how to recover from this month's debacle.    It shouldn't matter how we all felt about Trump in 2016.  He has a track record now, both of real policy successes and a frustrating inability or unwillingness to grow the coalition that elected him.   The stakes are high, because a side-effect of the "resistance" has been the emergence of Democrats advocating true socialism and disrespect for the Constitution.   It is crucial that we stop this in its tracks - and only unity based on shared values and a willingness, when necessary,  to be self-critical will work.   

We don't need anger that blinds us to Trump's accomplishments, nor do we need purges rooted in cults of personality.    We need clear vision and a willingness to ask tough questions and draw uncomfortable but necessary conclusions.

Actually, I want my doctor back. We had a riproaring economy during the Obama years, in spite of the government, we just got a pipeline finished thanks to Trump and a few rules thrown out, but even those rules would have created jobs to comply or evade them.. Trade deals didn't hurt us, and there are still caravans coming in.

And Hillary's ass is still not behind bars. etc.

Now I don't so much blame Trump for the bad as the GOP, after all they'll still porking the pigs they have been, and getting about the same done otherwise, which just might have been why they lost some seats. If the only way to clean house is to get rid of the dead weight and let the seat go over to the other side for a term, so be it. Primary challenges are generally ineffective against entrenched incumbents, and the party response to complaint has generally been the arrogant attitude of "where else are you going to go?". The GOP has reaped the benefit of that smugness, at a time when there are the Senate and the White House to stop Democrats from making policy for a couple of years.

Best to quit finger pointing and consolidate its Conservative feces for 2020, because anything less will not reap any rewards.
