In 1951, the Voice of America (VOA), which was at that time located in New York but managed from Washington by the State Department, was under heavily criticism, particularly from Republicans in the U.S. Congress, for failing to counter Soviet propaganda. Voice of America listeners in communist ruled Poland, in letters smuggled to the United States described VOA programs as “uninteresting, drab, bureaucratic in tone, unconvincing.”

“They give the impression that they are prepared and spoken by clerks who do their job perfunctorily without any intelligent understanding of the human element or of Polish susceptibilities,” was one of many critical comments.

There was a spirited debate in the United States as to whether VOA should continue to offer primarily non-political programs about America, or whether it should join recently established Radio Free Europe with more hard-hitting American opinions about communism, the Soviet Union, and communist China.

Did others as kids ever see those anti-Communist types of comics? I did. I think they got distribution fairly easily in what must have been schools.  There were films too and well into the '60s and maybe even '70s that were "Red Scare" in tone and it was warranted even if the literature sometimes seemed over-the-top.

There are whole books written on this.

In 1951, there were probably more than a few card-carrying communists working at the VOA...

A bunch of folks got fired from VOA I'm pretty sure. Yes, you are right, it was back in the day.
