13 people killed including shooter in California bar shooting

A shooter opened fire in a packed bar in Southern California during college night late Wednesday, wounding at least 11 people, some fatally, authorities said.

The mass shooting happened at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks. The gunman is believed to be among the fatalities, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office told CNN affiliate KABC.

Holden Harrah, who was at the bar, told CNN the gunman walked in and opened fire within seconds.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - (AP) â€” Thirteen people are dead after a gunman opened fire on a crowd at a country dance bar holding a weekly "college night" Wednesday in Southern California, sending hundreds fleeing in terror including some who used barstools to break windows and escape, authorities said.

The dead included 11 people inside the bar, the gunman and a sheriff's sergeant who was the first officer inside the door, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

"It's a horrific scene in there," Dean said at a news conference early Thursday in the parking lot of the Borderline Bar & Grill. "There's blood everywhere."

The gunman was tall and wearing all black with a hood over his head and his face partly covered, witnesses told TV stations at the scene. He first fired on a person working the door then appeared to open fire at random at the people inside, they said. ... More, plus video

Several of the cases my handguns came in have " Not Legal in California " stickers on them. Because of magazine capacity. Those tough CA gun laws did nothing to stop this from going down. In fact, it may have helped the shooter.

Authorities confirmed that the shooter had been killed, but did not immediately identify him. Dean said it was too early to determine whether there was any link to terrorism.

The gunman apparently was not carrying any form of identification and it will take time to take his fingerprints and run them through databases, local and federal officials said. The gunman was described as a white male, armed with a single handgun, a law enforcement source said.

All laws to limit handguns (or any guns) are virtually useless. I don't know the laws about buying guns in California, but there's nothing to stop a person from buying a pump shotgun or another type of firearm in another state if they're not disqualified for various reasons.
The only real deterrence when these nuts start firing are legally armed citizens firing back.

Bar situations, this was country night, really do seem to have an ever-present danger though things like this are rather rare events. We can remember the pulse nightclub shooting. A dark environment usually, some times hundreds of people. Usually, one would think a dangerous person is stopped at the door.
