Expert discusses the impact of daylight saving time on the body
November 2, 2018 by Caitlin Coyle, Rutgers University

This Sunday morning, most people in the United States will turn their clocks back by one hour in observance of daylight saving time, but won't get "an extra hour" of sleep. Daylight saving time just changes our circadian rhythm, which can disrupt our biological clocks and impact our health.

Helmut Zarbl, director of the Rutgers Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute and chair of the Environmental and Occupational Health Department at Rutgers School of Public Health, is an expert in circadian rhythm and its influence on sleep-wake cycles, hormone release, eating habits and more. We asked him to explain how daylight savings time affects us.

They need to end it. Pick one or the other and stay with that.

I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. (Did I mention that I hate it? Well, I do.)

I don’t think that tinkering with our internal clocks twice a year was ever anticipated by our evolutionary biology. Then again, humans zooming 500 mph above the earth reading a magazine wasn’t either. How about that jet lag!!?

Easy answer, adjust your schedule.  Or perhaps I should say DON'T adjust your schedule.

If you're used to getting up at 6, get up at 5.  Ignore what the clock says and it can't hurt you.

Stick it to the man.

Time should be sacred. Leave it alone.

If people want school to start at a different time for part of the year change it.

If people want to go to work at a different time for part of the year change it.

But don't screw with the time!

I feel bad for people who have to rotate between day, evening, and graveyard shifts.

It’s not just the time change that bothers me, it’s the clock change that annoys me; clocks everywhere, analog, digital, in stove, refrigerator, microwave, desk clocks, wall clocks, bathrooms, pen, wristwatch. Oy. Twice a year.

It is generally accepted that everyone hates this stupidity. We have moved beyond this nonsense for about 10 different and legit reasons. It is time for the country to disregard this govt' mandated bullshit like we did the 55 MPH speed limit and go on with our lives.

I don't adjust my schedule. That extra hour of looking at porn online in the morning is a good thang.  Actually might generate enough interest to stick it to the...

I don't care that much one way or the other regarding the "time change". Adjusting all the clocks around the house is a task.

Back in my working days, on "fall back day", we'd have to stop the train at the first station we arrived at just after 2am, set the watches back, and wait for 2am to "come around again" before we could leave. If the job made overtime, you'd lose an hour's pay that night, but then have the opportunity to "pick it up again" on "spring ahead day". Provided you were still working a night job, that is!

I agree.  It's stupid and unnecessary and a pain in the neck.
