CAN FEDERAL SPENDING BE CUT?

Federal revenues are booming, yet deficits are rising again because spending is booming even more. President Trump, unhappy about growing deficits, says he will ask all cabinet officers to find five percent in spending cuts for next year.

Sounds like a good proposal, but the linked USA Today story is devoted entirely to ridiculing it. You can’t cut federal spending, the reporters say: Congress spends money, not the president (true); Congress ignored Trump’s proposed budget, which would have eliminated 62 agencies, last year; tax cuts are partly responsible for increased deficits; even if all federal spending were cut five percent, it would amount to only $200 to $300 billion, a fraction of next year’s projected $1.1 trillion deficit; the real drivers of federal spending are Medicare and Medicaid; and so on.

The question:
"CAN FEDERAL SPENDING BE CUT?"

The answer:
A little, but not all that much.

The prognosis:
Things will keep going as they're going, until they can no longer keep going.

And that's about it.

I think Trump's five percent is to give him credibility when he begins one of his patented assaults on Congress.

Great answer and opinion, of which I share wholeheartedly.

So now a question -

Since both the Republican Party and the Democrats have no intention whatsoever to stop the civilization-crushing-debt freight train that is going to go over that cliff in front of us, lest a riot in the passenger cars erupt - why do people like you bust the chops of Conservatives like me who are advocating we get off the stupid train and off the tracks and onto something else in terms of a possible future viable political alternative before the collapse starts in earnest??

Corporate Collectivist Statism or full blown Communism is where both parties are taking us.  Neither are going to stem spending which will now grow by the trillions each year.  Until it ends everything because they have run out of everyone else's money.

So why get pissed that some of us are no longer willing to support those who are party to where we are going?  Or are you of the opinion that it is too little too late and that we need to just take what we can get for the ride down to oblivion?

Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775
