Texas Flooding Triggers Bridge Collapse; Evacuations, Water Rescues Underway

10/16/2018

A bridge has collapsed after heavy rain in parts of south-central Texas triggered major flooding along several rivers and creeks, where evacuations and water rescues are underway.

A section of the FM 2900 bridge collapsed in Kingsland on Tuesday morning, sending chunks of the bridge down the Llano River, according to a tweet.

Residents within a quarter mile of the river in the city of Llano were urged to evacuate on Tuesday, according to a Civil Emergency Message.

Authorities in Marble Falls told residents in several neighborhoods along the river to evacuate. The city is also asking residents to limit activities including laundry, washing dishes, using the toilet and taking showers because flooding was putting the city's wastewater plant under stress.

The river rose to its second highest crest on record Tuesday morning in the city about 75 miles northwest of Austin and home to more than 3,000....

Floodgate operations continue at Wirtz Dam, which forms Lake LBJ, and Starcke Dam, which forms Lake Marble Falls.

Flood operations at Mansfield and Tom Miller dams will begin at noon today.  Because of high, fast-moving floodwaters, LCRA also has closed lakes Travis, Marble Falls, LBJ, Inks and Buchanan until further notice.

This is a serious flood; please take precautions to protect people and property. We encourage you to follow local news media and NOAA Weather Radio for updated information about changing weather conditions.

Dangerous fast-moving water is flowing through lakes LBJ, Marble Falls and Travis.  Water levels on lakes LBJ, Marble Falls and the upper end of Lake Travis are very high as this dangerous flood is being passed through the lakes.  The Llano River destroyed the FM 2900 bridge at Kingsland - where the Llano River enters Lake LBJ - shortly after 9 a.m. the morning of Oct. 16.

LCRA will begin opening floodgates at Mansfield and Tom Miller dams at noon on Oct. 16.  Up to four flood gates may be opened by 6 p.m.  to make controlled releases from the flood pool of Lake Travis and manage river levels downstream of Mansfield Dam.  Lake Travis is projected to rise at rates of up to about one foot per hour at times today, and to within a range of 690 to 695 feet msl over the next one to two days.  Operations may change with additional rainfall or runoff upstream of downstream of Mansfield Dam.

Storm runoff from areas upstream of Buchanan Dam will be caught in Lake Buchanan.

Drove to Kerrville today without any problem, and the Guadalupe is back in it's banks, but there is more rain north.

Yup...rain to the north is ME.  All of our lakes are full and they are running into the Clear Fork of the Brazos.  Possum Kingdom Lake has the flood gates open....all of it is heading down stream to @thackney.

We are good.  This will peak about 10 feet below us.  Just makes us jittery watching all the flooding news.  We know how devistated some people's homes are going to be, just not in our area.

Too much water is heading down a lot of our rivers.  Be safe.

Here's What To Expect When Eight Floodgates Open On The Mansfield Dam

It’s never happened before, but the Lower Colorado River Authority will likely open eight floodgates on the Mansfield Dam above Lake Austin by noon Thursday.

So, what can you expect if you live in Austin?

Flooding On Some Streets

When eight gates are open, 50,000 cubic feet of water per second will flow from the dam....

I have a friend who owns a house on Lake Austin.  I hope her house survives.  She said Matthew McConaughey lives above her on the hill...so I guess his house will be saved.

LCRA’s River Operation Center is staffed 24-7 to manage the Highland Lakes during this historic flood event.

The Texas Highland Lakes is a chain of six fresh water lakes in Central Texas formed by six dams on the Lower Colorado River, which winds southeast from West Texas to Matagorda Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The dams and lakes comprising the Texas Highland Lakes chain are Buchanan Dam at Lake Buchanan; Inks Dam at Inks Lake; Wirtz Dam at Lake LBJ; Max Starcke Dam at Lake Marble Falls; Mansfield Dam at Lake Travis; and Tom Miller Dam at Lake Austin.

A friend lives on the shore of  Lake Travis. After his home flooded in the 91 flood, he rebuilt, using steel beams, elevated several feet above the flood level, with an elevator to get up into his home.

After historic Texas flooding, officials will likely open more floodgates on Central Texas dam

After the wettest September in Texas history, multiple Central Texas reservoirs are completely full. That has forced officials to consider releasing a historic amount of water down the Colorado River.

by Carlos Anchondo Oct. 18, 201818 hours ago

Across Central Texas and the Hill Country, heavy rain has led to catastrophic flooding in the past week. A bridge over the Llano River collapsed outside Kingsland on Tuesday and waters continue to rise, with homes flooding in Kingsland, Marble Falls and Granite Shoals. With more rainfall in the forecast, state and local officials are working to manage floodwaters before they move downstream.

Eight floodgates are likely to open on the Mansfield Dam above Lake Austin as more rainfall is expected over the next few days. The Lower Colorado River Authority, which operates the Highland Lakes dams, calls the potential move “an unprecedented action.”

Officials announced Wednesday that a woman was found dead at a low water crossing in downtown Llano, the second death as a result of this week's floods, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

"The extent of the damage from the air of the flooding in #BurnetCounty is both breathtaking, and heartbreaking," state Sen. Dawn Buckingham, R-Lakeway, tweeted Wednesday after surveying the flooding from a helicopter.

They've also opened the flood gates at the Canyon Lake dam.
