The stock market and corporate profits are soaring as wages continue to stagnate and everyday Americans struggle to make ends meet — let alone plan for retirement. Consumers, workers, farmers, and small-business owners face a litany of sharp practices in the marketplace.

There is a common force lurking behind these indicators, impacting the prosperity of average Americans in a complex web of economic forces. The effects of declining competition are everywhere — if you know where to look.

It is high time, then, for the Federal Trade Commission to catch up. Last month, the FTC commenced a series of hearings on “Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century.” And indeed, the first day started off on a strong, bipartisan note that may signal that, after more than four decades of permissive antitrust enforcement, the American economy is due for a shake-up.
