Tropical Storm Michael prompts hurricane watches in Florida as it picks up strength
Fox News, Oct 8, 2018, Greg Norman

Hurricane watches are now in effect in numerous counties along the Florida Panhandle as Tropical Storm Michael continues to strengthen ahead of an anticipated landfall as a Category 2 hurricane later this week.

The storm, which has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, was about 90 miles east of Cozumel, Mexico early Monday morning and is dumping rain on Cuba, the National Hurricane Center said.

“Michael is forecast to be a hurricane, and possibly a major hurricane, when it reaches the northeastern Gulf Coast by mid-week, and storm surge and hurricane watches are now in effect for portions of the area,” the Center said in an advisory.

“Some areas along the Florida Gulf Coast are especially vulnerable to storm surge, regardless of the storm’s exact track or intensity,” it added.

Forecasters said towns and cities in Southwest Florida will begin experiencing tropical storm-force winds as early as Tuesday morning. By Tuesday night, those winds are expected to be felt along the entire Gulf of Mexico coastline up to Louisiana.

My sympathies to SC and NC for the rain it appears they're going to get. My friend near Wilmington said they got at least 15 inches when Florence came through.

Oh my God, NOT AGAIN.  It’s been hot and humid all month, no sign of fall, and I don’t want tropical ANYTHING.  I’m at the end of my rope with this weather.

To answer your question, we’re in central VA.  I’m going to wait and see what our local weather guys have to say.  They’re usually more accurate.

I totally empathize.  Mid to high 80's and high humidity.  Blech!

But, 50's coming in tomorrow night with highs in the mid 70's.  That should feel good.

The media have probably got naratives, to characterize the damage as worst, for women, children and People of color.

President Trump has already secretly signaled the rich white priviledged, to leave the area.

Anyprobelsm, damage, losses will be blamed on that bad, rich uncaring Trump.

The storm itself will be blamed on "gloobull climate change" caused by oil companies, owned by rich white men.

Hurricane Michael update: Forecast to become a major Cat-3 hurricane nearing Florida
ABC News, Oct 8, 2018

A tropical weather system that rapidly strengthened into Hurricane Michael on Monday is likely to keep growing stronger ahead of an expected strike on Florida's Panhandle by midweek, forecasters said.

Michael could strengthen into a major hurricane with winds topping 111 mph (178 kph) by Tuesday night before an expected strike Wednesday on the Panhandle or Big Bend, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Since the storm will spend two to three days over the Gulf of Mexico, which has very warm water temperatures and favorable atmospheric conditions, "there is a real possibility that Michael will strengthen to a major hurricane before landfall," Robbie Berg, a hurricane specialist at the Miami-based storm forecasting hub, wrote in an advisory.

October 1 is always a big day for us in Texas.  Interesting fact is that in 160 years of recorded history a Cat 3 or greater storm has never hit the state.  Enough fronts and troughs bring the storms north and east in the gulf.

One thing I did read, but folks there please do not get your guard down, is that there is some dry air intermingling in the expected path which might curtail intensity forecasts.   In any case, plan for the worst.

The weather whores are once again inflating the seriousness of the storm to gin up ratings.   A tweeker on CNN says this will be a high cat 3 when it hits Panama City.

This turkey will be lucky to get to a Cat one.

It’s a Cat 3, now.  Then again, Florence reached Cat 4, fizzled as it made landfall, but moved slowly and dumped a lot of rain.  Slow moving, low intensity storms can’t be dismissed.  See Agnes and Harvey.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

Be careful over there.  This looks more like a Charlie than a Flo.

It was expected Flo was going to drop to a 1 or 2 a couple days out.  I think it will be a "pleasant" surprise if this is less than a 2.

There's definitely a decent storm out in the Gulf.  Tides are running about 18" higher than normal at the north end of Tampa Bay.  Most of my neighbors' docks are under water.
