Puerto Rico governor asks Trump to consider statehood
By Rafael Bernal - 09/19/18 06:11 PM EDT

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló (D) asked President Trump Wednesday to recognize "that Puerto Rico’s territorial status is discriminatory and allows for the unequal treatment of natural born U.S. citizens."

In a letter to the president obtained by The Hill and timed to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria hitting Puerto Rico on Thursday, Rosselló said the island's territorial status negatively affected recovery efforts post-Maria.

"As we revisit all that we have been through in the last year, one thing has not changed and remains the biggest impediment for Puerto Rico’s full and prosperous recovery: the inequalities Puerto Rico faces as the oldest, most populous colony in the world," wrote Rosselló.

Rosselló, who campaigned on the promise of promoting statehood, wrote to Trump that the Federal Emergency Management Agency's bureaucratic processes -- in which Puerto Rico has no say -- have slowed disaster recovery.

We've got a nice round number now. For example, where are we gonna put the 51st star on the flag? Messes everything up.

Besides, Mexico needs another state more than we do. They've only got 31.

Thanks to Harvard University we already know how that'll turn out.

They've had voting on this a couple of times over the last 15 years or so.  The choices were statehood, independence, or stay as a territory.  None of the choices could get a majority.

After how they botched Maria, I don't think they're ready for statehood.

Eventually, perhaps—but not yet.

They only thing they are ever going to be good for is being a farm system for the welfare rolls.

Great idea. Let's bring in another bankrupt welfare state, because Illinois isn't enough.

I was on some other political forum a few years ago, and the subject of PR's independence prospects arose.
Some person who identified as a Puerto Rican launched a rant that America and Americans needed PR because we wanted to rape PR for its "natural resources"  and  because we like to subjugate and torture oppressed Latin Americans.
I informed him that many Americans have no idea that PR is an American possession and that many who do know would like to cut the life support.
I received no reply.

The statehood movement has been around since  at least the 60s.  I remember hearing about some referendum or the other involving statehood when I was still a kid.  It was always voted down.

I agree with those who say we would be adding another welfare state if PR became a state.  Bad enough the US finances this hellhole now.  As a state, PR would be getting more and more "free money."  We have enough of that in the present 50 states.
