Ted Cruz's Challenger Ducks Out Of Friday's Debate
« on: August 27, 2018, 08:20:44 pm »
On Monday, U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, the Democrat running against Republican incumbent Ted Cruz in Texas' U.S. Senate race, announced that he is ducking a debate that had been scheduled for this Friday, blustering that it "is not going to happen."

O’Rourke was appearing at the 2018 Texas Disability Issues Forum in Austin when he opined, "Friday in Dallas is not going to happen, but I'm convinced we will debate. I'm convinced there will be a number of debates."

Just not this Friday.

In late July, Cruz strategist Jeff Roe sent a letter to O'Rourke, suggesting five debates: August 31 in Dallas on "Jobs/Taxes/Federal Regulations/National Economy"; September 14 in McAllen on "Immigration/Border Security/Criminal Justice/Supreme Court"; September 21 in San Antonio on "Foreign Policy/National Security"; October 5 in Houston on "Energy/Trade/Texas Economy"; and October 12 in Lubbock on "Healthcare/Obamacare."

The debates were suggested for Friday evenings because the Senate is still in session. O’Rourke accepted the debates and offered a sixth in his hometown of El Paso.

In April, O'Rourke's campaign kicked off the debate negotiations by proposing six debates, including two in Spanish.

But on Monday, O'Rourke complained that Cruz's campaign has "attempted to dictate" the time, the moderators, and the subjects for the debates. He said, "We're working through those differences, and we're trying to introduce more of a collaborative style to the negotiations than he may be used to. And so we're confident that out of that, we're going to come to something good."

Ironically, O’Rourke’s team had suggested coordinating a debate schedule as far back as April. But even before that, in March, Cruz noted that he had debated Senator Bernie Sanders numerous times on TV, adding, "I am not remotely afraid to debate left-wing liberal socialists."

Someone needs to dress up like a chicken and start following Robert around.

I am guessing he thinks he has the momentum, and doesn't want to lose it with maybe one of the best debaters in the country.

Watch, I'd almost bet there will be only one, and it will be the near or at the end of the campaign.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

I think you're right.

Too bad; it would have been fun to watch.

He would use it to his advantage as some sort of cultural appropriation stunt.

He should at least hold a VA fundraiser for chickening out.

Wise decision... since.... Cruz would have made him look like a 3rd grader at an Easter Egg Hunt after all the eggs have been found.

Or something like that.....lol.

He may feel debating isn't necessary .... because he's got the momentum.

An interesting and slightly upsetting dynamic is playing our in Texas.

You people worry about this all you please,  but I'm not going to join you.

Cruz will win this in November by double digits.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Yep we heard all this with "Abortion Barbie".

Abortion Barbie wasn't likable and she wasn't being played by the local media around Texas as the 'new Obama'. She only appealed to hard core liberals. Francis is playing the game completely differently.

On top of that, Republicans don't seem motivated. Local precinct offices can't get volunteers to man phones, pass out signs, or go door to door. The offices are ghost towns.

You can keep campaigning for Paddy all you want.  Not going to change a thing.

That isn't campaigning for Francis.

What is helping Francis is people with the attitude that 'it is in the bag' so they don't get out there and volunteer. They think it is a given so they don't need to break a sweat. Convincing you self any battle is easy is the quickest way to defeat- it is complacency.

It is better if you go in assuming you are 20 points down and fight like it.

O'Reilly may be thinking he has nothing to gain and a lot to lose, by debating Cruz.
The fool should have never called Cruz out on it in the first place.
But, since he did, he should man up and do it.
If not, Cruz should take every opportunity he has to asked people "Why is O'Reilly backing out of these debates?"

I've heard soundbites from some of his stump speeches...you're insulting 3rd graders.

Cruz has been pretty much shut out of news coverage.  If Francis were to debate him, that would give Cruz coverage, and make Francis look bad.  Absolutely no reason for Francis to do it.

The ones who still refer to him as "Lyin' Ted."  I think they'd be fine with losing the Senate if that's what it takes to get back at Cruz.

That’s what worries me - usually the one in front is in no hurry to debate. On the other hand, if they’re neck n neck it probably wouldn’t be in Beto’s interests to debate either.

What had Cruz accomplished at that time? A Don Quixote stance may have been admirable but didn't do anything.

Well, this supporter of the President will be pissed as hell if Cruz loses this seat; as I suspect the President will be, too.

Does anyone in Texas know if someone from the Cruz campaign has called the President's office for help?  The President's calendar is filling up.
