The Stupidity Of Trump's Anti-McCain Antics
« on: August 27, 2018, 06:27:04 pm »
On Saturday, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) passed away at age 81. President Trump, who has had a historically awful relationship with McCain, responded in typical Trumpian fashion: he had the White House flag lowered to half-mast for the statutory period, then rose it to full height again despite the tradition of keeping the flag lowered until a sitting senator’s burial. Trump refused to issue a presidential proclamation about McCain, instead tweeting about McCain:

Quote
My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!

Trump was not invited to McCain’s funeral; he had infamously called into question McCain’s heroism for doing five years in a Viet Cong prison, including two years of solitary confinement. Meanwhile, Trump had joked for years about avoiding STDs in the 1970s, calling it his own personal Vietnam. When asked about McCain’s death at the White House, Trump sat in stony silence.

It’s worth noting that half of the media’s enthusiasm for McCain in recent years has come as a direct result of McCain’s opposition to Trump. But whatever the reason, Trump’s behavior is egregious and beneath the office he holds. Trump is being petty and vindictive. That's no surprise.
His behavior is also dumb politics. Yes, his base loves it – any sign of militancy from Trump makes the base happy, particularly since many conservatives saw McCain as politically wishy-washy at best.

<snip>

Trump’s supporters won’t go anywhere because they have nowhere else to go. But everyone else is far less likely to give Trump the benefit of the doubt as time goes on, no matter how good the economy remains. Character does matter. Hillary had none, so Trump eked out an electoral college victory. But Trump is letting the opportunity to redefine his character and win over admirers slip through his fingers out of pure egotistic brutality.

It appears that McCain was just as graceless as Trump.  The Daily Mail is reporting that McCain's last words were about weakening the country when we hide behind walls.   **nononono*

The media has been licking their chops for months, anticipating McCain's demise as an excuse to go after Trump.  They weren't going to be denied their pound of flesh.

In all honesty Trump baited the hook for the media sharks with his POW statement about McCain.  In a way it's a self inflicted wound.

Yup.  Trump is lauded by his supporters as a fighter,  but time and again he shows that doesn't fight smart.   He picks fights he doesn't need to, just as small children pick at scabs.

Whatever he may feel personally about McCain, lots of the folks who he needs to support him politically respected the man as one of the party's, and the nation's, most important and influential leaders over the past 50 years.    Why alienate your friends and allies?   Why do so when it is completely unnecessary?   But it's par for the course for Trump,  who cannot comprehend the value of grace.

Not really much point in reading past that livid demonstration of ignorance on the part of the so-called reporter.

Bob Dole is up there in years, was the nominee.   Is he going to be treated better when he passes away? He's done a lot for the country as well. It may well be the same way.

Dole also supported the 2016 Republican nominee, wholeheartedly.

@txradioguy

It's no surprise that we didn't agree with a lot of McCain's politics, but that's never been the point of what we (you, I, and others) have been saying.  Not arguing with your point, because I know you know that already.

I listened to Dana Loesch earlier.  She's more of a Trump supporter than I thought she would be, but she read McCain's last words, and they generally weren't bad.  She noted the reference to the wall, but she said she wasn't going to begrudge him that, because as much as she disagreed with him politically, people are more than issues and more than votes they cast, and we're at the point where that truth is becoming lost.

Dana said that she turned off comments to her social media for the first time ever she saw when hundreds of people posting things like "McCain should have died in Vietnam".  She made note that people who are bashing McCain before he's in the ground are nothing but lazy, fat-assed armchair patriots who warm their hands over the sacrifices of others.

Maybe the POTUS has a plan to gaff the media sharks.  There is a lot of intel about McCain that the majority of voters don't know about.  I think POTUS comes across as tactless and tasteless, but maybe he has patriotic reasons for hating McCain.

I won't excuse those kinds of statements against McCain.  But it's born out of frustration with one milquetoast Republican after another who refused to fight the Democrats,   guys like Romney and McCain.   As I've pointed out many times,  the press was just as nasty towards McCain in 2008, as they are against Trump today.   Where does being nice get us?  Ok,  great, you can take the high road and have your precious purity.  Is it any consolation when the Democrats are running roughshod?

Is Trump always effective? No.  But my God at least finally there is somebody, anybody who can stand up to them.

Well, then there was the stupidity of McCain's anti-Conservative antics.

Color me unmoved by the fact the flag is not at half-mast.  McCain planned a funeral for himself grander than that of a beloved president.  So he has his reward.

Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775

Ben Shapiro is a worthless azzhole. He is a rabid anti-Trumper which makes him A) stupid because whatever candidate he pimped for (Cruz) lost his ass in an embarrassing fashion and B) he is forced to defend a sleazy and corrupt to the core establishment hack like McCain to make his laughable points.

Silly Bennie was about 4 when Keating 5 hit and 8 when Cindy McCain skated on felony drug charges due to Crazy Johnnie's influence, so he may not be aware that he is about as low shelf and worthless as a bucket of dead maggots. If he did he would know that defending him to a large segment of the population is a joke.

McCain literally gave Trump the finger from the grave. While he was alive he gave as good as he got.

Let's just call it a draw.

Even Rick Roberts, albeit generally respectful, is dismayed that McCain requested that Trump not attend his funeral.   I mean... who (but a rabid leftie) does that?    :shrug:

My goodness, Frank, you're being eloquent again.  (Actually, I cut Ben some slack, because he is suffering from a pretty widespread disease of MIS--McCain Ignorance Syndrome.)
