Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is welcoming the possibility of a ceasefire in Afghanistan.

Pompeo called for peace Sunday, saying the U.S. supports President Ashraf Ghani’s offer to the Taliban and “mutually agreed agenda.”

He reiterated the U.S. is ready to facilitate direct negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

This sounds nice enough on its face.

But it will never happen.

Look up the islamic term "hudna".

That will explain everything.

That hardly matters as we can't stay there forever. This should have been a limited mission, over within a year. Seventeen years in a landlocked country and at the mercy of somewhat allied bordering nations is insanity.

Someone needs to tell the Taliban...they've been more aggressive lately than they have been in quite some time.

Then for seventeen solid years we have failed.

Then for seventeen solid years we have failed.

The failure comes from not going after them where they live...in the Waziristan region of Pakistan.  Another 6 weeks and they'll retreat back there to re arm...recruit...train and hang out with their families while the snow closes down the Khyber Pass and other Taliban routes into Afghanistan.

It's a no mans land for the Pak Army...and it has been since my dad was in the Air Force in Pakistan in the 60's.

What we need to do is bomb the shit out of that area with A-10's B-1's and B-52's...collapse Khyber pass road into Afghanistan and trap them inside the Pakistan border.  And if the Paki government has a problem with it tell them to pound sand.

But no matter how much material support the Taliban gets from sympathizers within the Paki government and military agencies...we play nice with them and let them rest up all winter until the snow in the passes melt and they come back down to Afghanistan for the "fighting season".

Following 9-11-2001 we should have told Afghanistan to hand over Bin Laden within 30days, or prepare tto carpet bomb the entire surface area, until he is dead, turned over, or life no longer lives there.

The US got queasy over Hiroshims/Nagasaki but we also haven't decisively won a major war since then, either.

Note the Japs haven't been a problem, too.

Pakistan is our supply route.

And they rob us and ransack our sully trucks before they ever get tthem our bases from the Port.

They’ll cut a shipping by container in half to avo D cutting off the customs locks on the doors...steal gear and uniforms...weld it back together repaint it and sent it on it’s way.

The jingle truck drivers will mysteriously go on strike and refuse to cross the border leaving us precariously low on supplies.

With friends like that...

I'm all for that, demanding the government hand them over; but did they even have a functioning government?

Was Bin Laden in Afghanistan? He could easily move between several 'stans' or to an Arab country. We finally tagged him in Pakistan.

Yes he was in Afghanistan.  He was Saudi by birth but he and a bunch of others trekked to Afghanistan and with the bin Laden money set up their own freedom fighter outfit to fight the Russians.  He was very much part of the birth of the Taliban.  His family disowned him for his radical ways but his money financed an lot of operation pre and post 9/11.

We found him in Pakistan because the ISI...the Paki Intelligence Agency provides support to the Taliban and helped in their creation as well.  There is a lot of sympathy amongst the Pak military for the Taliban which is why Osama had a house in a neighborhood of retired general officers.
