South Africa farm seizure: Terrified white farmers plot escape as crackdown looms

A RECORD number of white South African farmers have put their land up for sale amid fears the ruling party is considering confiscating properties bigger than 25,000 acres.

Tensions among the countryâ€™s white farming community have been rising since the election of Cyril Ramaphosa assumed office earlier this year and committed his African National Congress (ANC) to land expropriation.

And ANC chairman Gwede Mantashe sparked panic last week when he said: â€œYou shouldnâ€™t own more than 25,000 acres of land.

â€œTherefore if you own more it should be taken without compensation.

â€œPeople who are privileged never give away privilege as a matter of a gift.

Next door neighbor country, Rhodesia ought to be a warning for how t destroy a very nice places.

Rhodesia and South Africa, are both gifted with natural resources. Like Venezuela, BTW.

I have a really hard time feeling sorry for anyone that stupid and greedy. I DO feel sorry for their children,who though no fault of their own,will die with their parents,though.

That writing has been on the wall for some time.

You have to be a little crazy to stay there if you are white and own land. As things get worse the owning land part won't even matter.

Especially since there is no one to sell it to. The BEST they can hope for is a boat ticket out of Africa IF they GIVE their farms to a ANC official.

Even then they have to hope they aren't murdered and eaten before they get on the boat.

Then again,the loss of people THAT freaking stupid is no great loss to the gene pool.

It's not that they were "stupid".
They are certainly stubborn.
And that will cost them.

Many of them have had roots there for a few hundred years.
South Africa -- the nation -- was built by WHITES, and NOT by blacks.

And now that is disappearing right in front of them.

Tell me, sneakypete. And be honest.
If a bunch of folks (who were completely different from you) took over your town, and then drove up to your place, and told you they were taking it over because you "stole it from them"....
What would YOU think?
What would YOU do?

Would YOU be worried about "being eaten" before you "got on the boat"...?

I would be too busy feeding them to my hogs to worry about it too much.

Providing of course that I didn't have a family with young children to protect and provide for. If I did,I would immediately put my place up for sale while there was still SOME hope of finding a buyer,and move my family somewhere safe so I could provide for and protect them.

Screw farms. Your first obligation is to protect your family if you have one.

The government is only paying the farmers 10% of the estimated value. I'm amazed these farmers did not see the writing on the wall in the 1990s. Maybe the real estate would have brought a higher price. Seriously, how did they think this would end? ANC is communist through and through.

If someone were to suggest that these new SA leaders actions are validating fears that led to the policy of Apartheid in years past all the good folks would jump on them like chickens on a junebug.

Panic ensued last week when ANC chairman Gwede Mantashe announced that, let me quote:

â€œYou shouldnâ€™t own more than 25,000 acres of land. Therefore, if you own more it should be taken without compensation. People who are privileged never give away privilege as a matter of a gift. And that is why we say, to give you the tools, revisit the constitution so that you have a legal tool to do it.â€

Interestingly enough, both black and white farmer unions condemned Gwedeâ€™s communist ideas, and predicted that following mass-scale land confiscations, South Africaâ€™s economy will collapse and the country may no longer be capable of feeding its citizenry. The exact same thing happened to Zimbabwe by the way, i.e. thereâ€™s enough empiric evidence to support the claim.

My sympathy/concern for people who choose this path is all used up. Some lessons have to be learned - repeatedly - the hard way.
