A Minneapolis lawyer admitted he and a partner planted pornography on an internet file sharing server, then sued users for copyright violations when they downloaded the material.

On Friday, Paul Hansmeier pled guilty Friday to federal fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges, although as the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports, he can withdraw the plea if his appeal of the district court’s denial of his earlier motion to dismiss the case is successful. Last December, U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger stated, “I’m often tempted to say I’ve seen it all, and then something like this comes along.” Joseph Daly, professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, added, “Essentially they are acting like the mafia … They are using fraud, wire fraud. They are using pressure tactics, fear, to extort money from people.”
