Short version: The New Zealand government, in an effort to stem a shortage of housing in the country, has barred those who do not live in New Zealand from owning homes in the country. Those with legal residency are exempt, as are those in Australia and Singapore, each of which has a free trade agreement with New Zealand.

Interesting.  Are the Chinese buying up NZ?

From the article... Of the foreign interests buying land in New Zealand, yes, China is one of the biggest buyers. However, it's only a small portion of the housing market, so there are other factors in play in the spike in prices and shortage of available homes.
