China angered at new U.S. defense act, to assess content
Ben Blanchard

BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Tuesday condemned measures targeting it in a new U.S. defense act, saying it exaggerated antagonism and that Beijing would take a close look at aspects that beef up the role of a U.S. panel that reviews foreign investment proposals.

China’s complaints about the act come as the world’s two biggest economies engage in an increasingly bitter fight over trade, levying tariffs on each others’ products.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a $716-billion defense policy act on Monday that authorizes military spending and waters down controls on U.S. government contracts with China’s ZTE Corp and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd .

Well, since they're claiming, and developing airstrips on, islands which are in International Waters, they can stuff it.
My 'Viking Hunter' High Adventure Alternate History Series is FREE, ALL 3 volumes, at most ebook retailers including Ibooks, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and more.

In Vol 2 the weapons come out in a winner take all war on two fronts.

Vol 3 opens with the rigged murder trial of the villain in a Viking Court under Viking law to set the stage for the hero's own murder trial.

I agree.  But we need to realize why they are doing this and quit just flying one airplane or sailing a couple ships through the area every six months.

China has goal to be the lone superpower in the world by the time the 100th anniversary of the 1949 Communist Revolution rolls around.  They honestly believe they've been here longer than just about any country on the planet and it's their birthright so to speak to be the top dog...no matter how long they have to wait.

Those islands will be their picket line to prevent anyone from coming to the aid of Taiwan when the ChiComs decide to reunite the two China's.

And it will prevent any regional ally from coming to their aid too like the Philippines.

The ChiComs already run the operations from stem to stern on the Panama Canal.  Whatcha wanna bet the locks at both ends will suddenly and mysteriously shut down when they retake Taiwan?

We need to start positioning assets back at Clark AB and Subic Bay as well as Wake and Midway. YOu wanna see the ChiComs get rattled...lets really show them we mean business about keeping international waters free and open.

In all this Trade War kerfuffle there ain't been mention of Japan.

Look them up through the USTR and see what kind of trade crap they pull on us.

All of the comments are worth reading here. I think we just critiqued Russia over some missiles they were building and that was just last week. It does seem some of what goes around, comes around.

Japan honestly, is having a problem having a replacement population and they aren't the only ones, I'd remember that. Japan is also where one hears of a lost generation per their economy, lost decade too.

Japan’s constitution won’t allow it. And after WWII the population is very loathe to be perceived as anything close to an aggressor in the region.

As for your take on China. You need to study history.

Hmm..........................ok pal, let's review history.
The ranking Asian powers were/are:
* the Persian Empire, till Alexander the Great,
* the Mughal and Gupta Empires of India, until the British arrived in the 18th century.
* Japan, following its opening by Commodore Perry in 1853.
Japan crushed China in both Sino-Japanese Wars, in 1894 and in 1937.
So China is what in terms of world power?????

First off you need to fast forward to the 21st Century if you want to discuss this topic.

Secondly...it doesn't matter who the Imperial Japanese under their old militant feudal system beat.  They aren't that country anymore.  They took constitutional measures after they got beaet in WWII to prevent the military from ever becoming an offensive force again.

Finally.  China has a massive sphere of influence in Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Quote
China’s sphere of influence extending over Mongolia, North Korea, Taiwan, the Indochinese states of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, but also Thailand, Burma/Myanmar and the continental part of Malaysia. A remarkable addition in the west is Pakistan, giving China almost immediate access to the Persian Gulf.

China’s influence extended beyond the countries just mentioned, to most of the former Soviet Central Asian ‘stans’ (except Turkmenistan), part of Afghanistan, the whole of Indonesia, the rest of Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and significant parts of the Russian Far East.

It's good that they are upgrading their systems and equipment.

But as the article notes japan still very much has a defensive only force with no real offensive weapons.

It would take a change in their Constitution to allow the armed forces to be anything else than a home defense force.

Fair retort but I completely reject the argument and will end it here.
The conceit of the present time is hardly a measure of the future.
Rather, as the wise Greeks asserted; the past is prologue and
a far better predictor of the future; and China's past is present!
Additionally, national land mass was determined by creation; so what?
What matters is who you are; not what size you are!
In 1914, Czarist Russia, some 18x the size of Germany, was
effectively knocked out of WW1 at Tannenberg, that same year!
Britain, excluding her colonies, had the smallest land mass of a great
Empire since Greece. Yet they effectively ruled half the world. Why?
Because of their values and virtues; among them; self-discipline,
courage, perseverance, initiative and honor.
Yet somehow these values and virtues will suddenly appear in China,
w/a heritage of autocratic rule, that has now morphed into totalitarian
Marxism having a veneer of "so called " capitalism. Why of course!
Japan awakened in 1853, seeing Britain in their west, and changed.
Having been there, it can change again if it chooses to.
In contrast, China has no such legacy to repeat; the real world.

You are too overly focused on a certain time in history and you have blinders on to any history before or after the era you seem fixiated on.

And that really makes your arguments as to why we don't need to worry about China moot.

You totally ignore the Yuan and Ming Dynasty periods as well as their imperial dynasty that lasted from the 1600's thru 1912.

They were here before most of the modern countries were a gleam in an explorer's eye.  And they plan on being here long after we are gone.

And we make a very grave mistake in downplaying what they are doing in Asia and the PacRim.  They have infiltrated this hemisphere as well and their intention will only serve their efforts and goals.

And that is to become the lone super power in the world.

Japan's still got more bite than China's PLAN

China's new aircraft carrier is a joke, when measured against our's or even Japan's Self Defense "Helicopter Carrier".

As the vid says Japan designed these ship to upgrade them if the situation changes.

"Helicopter Carriers"

That can launch F-35s.

But their bite is second strike by nature and design.

I read about those helicopter carriers...largest ships they've put to sea since WWII

Reuters here in Feb 2018 said Japan had 42 F-35s and were seriously considering ordering 20 more over the next 6 years.

Whatever order conflict with China may come in, I'd personally not want to be a Chinese pilot after the 1st shot's fired and the shizzle starts flying.

IMHO part of China building those barrier islands as far out as the Spratley's is to isolate Japan and prevent us from surging Naval or USAF forces from Guam or Hawaii.

China can overwhelm a more deadly Japanese Self Defense Force with sheer numbers and constrict them like a python.
