More likely that it was the optics of him hiring a black woman.... since he needs more of the black vote.

She already released a taped call to Trump after the firing. Call starts out Trump tells her he heard on television she is thinking of leaving. She says she was told they didn't want her there. Trump tells her he didn't know anything about the firing, and he doesn't love that.That really makes things look bad. Trump isn't aware of who is being fired? He certainly is not in control.

The President didn't pull her from anywhere. She begged the President-elect and promised with tears in her eyes she'd be an asset for the administration's outreach to blacks. He gave her a chance.

Oh, pish (as a colleague of mine would say). 99% of CEO's tell their COS or COO to handle an awkward, potentially ugly firing ... and to keep their fingerprints off it. I'd bet real money the President filled Kelly in on his call with Omarosa.It's SOP in the real world of business.
