Trump administration unveils plan to gut 'gainful employment' education rule

The Trump administration has released a proposal to gut an Obama-era rule that punished colleges for career programs that caused students to amass too much debt.

The Obama administration put the rule, known as "gainful employment," in place in 2014 as part of a crackdown on for-profit schools, on the basis that the government needed to protect students from expensive career programs that don't make them more attractive to employers and that don't result in decent salaries. Students had complained about chains such as ITT Tech and Corinthian Colleges, which they said defrauded them and left them with degrees that were worthless to their job prospects.

Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a statement that the overhaul of the rule would "improve accountability."

Hmm....."career programs that don't make them more attractive to employers and that don't result in decent salaries".   What about worthless college degrees in stupid stuff that will never ever result in a decent job or salary?  I guess to the Obama admin, which took over the college loans program, worthless college degrees don't really matter all that much as long as they (government) get their share of blood out of the student and their parents, eh?

That too. The problem was/is real but the Obama admin went after just the for-profits. Barring a separation of education and state, I hope Team DeVos comes up with a better policy.

Sounds like they are, as now all institutions will be required to ‘label’ their products. Obama could not care less about graduating students with worthless degrees - he was big on steering all kids to college as it gave the state four year min to wash their young brains. The diploma mills had no such record of political indoctrination.

Right. 

This rule was enacted back in 2014....but I wonder if Barry might have had Trump's Wharton School in mind as a prime target back then. 

Obama's rule essentially hurt (not helped) low-income students.

It would, but barring that, at least only fund majors that actually allow someone to get a real job.
