And it’s a legitimate reason for President Trump to decline to be interviewed.

Studies will someday be done on the deleterious effect Donald Trump has had on the brains of people who loathe him. It drives them to say things that are as palpably foolish as some of the president’s own doozies. This week’s winner: There is no such thing as a “perjury trap.”

Because some of the people making this nonsensical claim are very smart, let’s stipulate that the heated moment we find ourselves in is driven by politics, not law or logic.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller wants to interview President Trump. President Trump’s legal team is taking the public position that, although the president wants bigly to answer Mueller’s questions, the lawyers are discouraging this because it could be a “perjury trap.” That is, Mueller’s prosecutors could be plotting to trip the president up, to dazzle him into saying something inaccurate that could be grist for a false-statements prosecution.

No way would I let him talk with Mueller. Trump cannot tell the truth.  The truth to him is what he is saying at the time.  He would be charged for lying, same as Clinton was charged for lying and impeached by the House.

I wouldn't talk to Mueller. He's the professional and I'm the amateur and he might get me to contradict myself on what is my name.

Setting aside the "trump is incapable of telling the truth" trope, a Perjury trap is guaranteed here, no matter what Trump says.  Springing the trap is the easiest thing in the world.  All Mueller would have to do is find/bribe/blackmail somebody into contradicting even the most innocuous of statements and here comes the  Perjury charge.

Yep.  And that part of the plan has probably already been taken care of ahead of time.

Mueller probably already has a list of 'contradictions' made up from past Trump statements. All he'd have to do is question him on those and viola, an instant perjury rap.

Yeah... but what gets me is..... if this is so crystal clear to most of us (here)....

how the hell is he seemingly getting away with trying to set up this perjury trap?  It's surreal.

But then, this political climate in the US has been that way since around the year 2000.  ?

Not agree to be interviewed by the Mueller team.

I'm fairly sure Trump views this as a mano a mano thing. Big mistake when you're dealing with a prosecutor with unlimited scope and resources. And his own huge ego.

And a political party that doesn't necessarily have his back.
