Facing Mexico’s violence in one of its most violent cities, López Obrador stubbornly offers hope

At stake for the U.S. is the decade-old Merida Initiative which has U.S. agencies helping Mexico fight criminals and drug trafficking while training security forces and supporting programs to improve Mexico's weak judicial institutions.

"We have the freedom to choose our own path," López Obrador said, without worrying what the "foreign government" may like or dislike. "We will not care. If it's good for Mexico we'll put it into practice."

Ciudad Juárez bears its name after Benito Juárez, president of Mexico from 1858 to 1872 and a national symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign intervention. The revered president is one of López Obrador's heroes, and the city carries much symbolism for the new president.

He might do some good. We will see. I wish him well... except on socialist type issues but I'm not sure if he is really into that.
