BERLIN (Reuters) - The European Union’s budget commissioner suggested on Wednesday the bloc would be ready to discuss mutual tariff cuts with the United States across a range of products, provided Washington lifts recent punitive tariffs first.

Speaking before an EU delegation travels to Washington for talks on Wednesday on a long-term trade deal, Guenther Oettinger said the EU wanted the United States to first drop its new tariffs on aluminum and steel imports.

“Firstly, our common line is that we expect the existing punitive tariffs to be lifted,” Oettinger, a German, said of the EU’s position. “Then we are ready to discuss a reduction and restructuring of all tariffs in all sectors.”

I'll guess that Trump will accept. The threat of reimposing the tariffs will hang over the negotiations. But then, I don't know the particulars of this offer.

I think the president just may have been being absurd to illustrate the absurdity of tariffs to everyone.   Don't know for sure but it's certainly within the realm of possibility.

Who here believes -- really, truly believes -- that these cuts would have been forthcoming if President Trump had NOT first threatened (and enacted) tariffs against European products?

I'll be waiting, listenin' for the crickets...

And an addendum:
Which of the -other- 2016 Republican candidates would have fought the Euro-tariffs as did Mr. Trump?

Not sure I want to just drop tariffs both ways.

For years, the EU has been sticking it to us.  Some payback needed
