6 July 2018 -- So what are some of these shortfalls? They involve hypersonic missiles, electronic warfare (EW), and artificial intelligence (AI). The most high-profile is hypersonics -- weapons designed to move through the atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound. Mike Griffin, U.S. undersecretary of defense for research and development has made hypersonics his top priority and has warned that China has conducted 20 times more tests than the U.S.
