A federal judge in Los Angeles has rejected a request by the adult film actress Stormy Daniels to restart her lawsuit there against US President Donald Trump and his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen.

US District Judge James Otero said the amount of media attention in the case was not a sufficient reason to reconsider the 90-day stay he had imposed in April.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, is suing to void a non-disclosure agreement under which Cohen paid her $US130,000 ($A176,000) not to discuss her alleged relationship with Trump in 2006 and 2007.

"While it is undeniable that plaintiff has a valid interest in the prompt resolution of her claims, plaintiff has not established that she has actually been deterred from speaking," Otero wrote.

(Reuters) - A Los Angeles judge has canceled a June 21 hearing at which a lawyer for adult film actress Stormy Daniels planned to seek the resumption of her lawsuit there against U.S. President Donald Trump and his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen.

According to an order issued on Monday, U.S. District Judge James Otero decided it was unnecessary to hear arguments on the request by Daniels' lawyer Michael Avenatti to lift a 90-day stay imposed on April 28.

Otero will rule on the request later. In imposing the stay, the judge cited the potential overlap between Daniels' lawsuit and a separate criminal probe by federal prosecutors in Manhattan that he said could result in Cohen's indictment.

American Media, the publisher of the National Enquirer, was subpoenaed by federal prosecutors for records related to a $150,000 payment made to ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal.
 
The subpoena is part of a criminal investigation of President Donald Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, the Journal reported Wednesday. Cohen, who has not been charged, is currently involved in court proceedings over the raft of materials seized from his properties in raids by federal agents in April.

American Media made the payment to McDougal in exchange for the rights to her story alleging she had an affair with Trump more than a decade earlier. The publisher never ran the story, in a practice reportedly known within the industry as "catch and kill."

The White House has denied Trump had sex with McDougal.
