Child in Idaho Has Plague

June 14, 2018 -- A child in Idaho has been diagnosed with the plague and people need to be on alert for the potentially fatal disease, state health officials said Tuesday.

The child -- from Elmore County, located between Twin Falls and Boise -- is only the fifth person to be infected with the bacterial disease in Idaho since 1940, the Idaho State Journalreported.

Which begs the question.... how did the child get the plague... and how many more have been exposed and/or infected?

Probably got it from mouse or rat droppings they came into contact with.

Really?   Great.   And again.... how did it get started in the US?   Is it a product of our wonderful illegal immigration (or refugee) system?  I remember too well the ebola scare a while back.

Nah. It has been here, carried by the prairie dog populations and other rodents. Humans quit thinning out the prairie dogs and built out and now and then the two mix.

Ebola was an Obama Administration import, all the way.

We get reports of squirrels with plague every few years, in 2015 they were in Yosemite and Tahoe. Unless you believe the squirrels were illegal immigrants? :silly:

A question for somebody more knowledgeable than me: Not to make light of this situation, but is the plague that big of a deal with modern medicine? We have meds to deal with the life threatening aspects of it

From the Mayo Clinic site....

Medications

As soon as your doctor suspects that you have plague, you'll need to be admitted to a hospital. There, you'll receive powerful antibiotics, such as:

•Gentamicin
•Doxycycline (Vibramycin)
•Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
•Levofloxacin (Levaquin)

Sounds like early, strong treatment takes care of it.

Amen!

Squirrels with the plague are one thing........ a child is quite another.

The plague is very treatable.  It aint like when we lived back in the days when it killed millions of people.

What worries me is the "flu like symptoms."   All these diseases  have "flu like symptoms"

As with any infectious disease, as long as the number of infected people does not overwhelm the number of available appropriate hospital beds and the supply of drugs to combat it, all can be under control. But like someone spending just a little more than they are making, the situation can get out of hand if the number of cases exceed the available resources.

Anything contagious that can kill you is a bit of a 'big deal'--often manageable, but serious, and cause for concern, especially if the vector is not known. Location matters, too.  If this was in the rat population in NYC, for instance, rather than an isolated and fairly unique incident in a much more rural area, it would be serious indeed.

I agree, and not just in the medical area.
