Enforcement of Iowa's fetal heartbeat abortion law will be put on hold while a lawsuit challenging its constitutionality is resolved, a county judge decided Friday.

The hearing in Polk County District Court to ask a judge to temporarily block the law lasted just a few minutes. Lawyers representing the state agreed to a temporary injunction halting implementation of the law, which was set to take effect July 1.

District Court Judge Michael Huppert granted the temporary injunction after state lawyers raised no objections. The injunction stops the law from being enforced while the litigation works its way through the courts, but does not permanently block the law.
