Woman says her Amazon device recorded private conversation, sent it out to random contact

A Portland family contacted Amazon to investigate after they say a private conversation in their home was recorded by Amazon's Alexa -- the voice-controlled smart speaker -- and that the recorded audio was sent to the phone of a random person in Seattle, who was in the family’s contact list....

...But Danielle said two weeks ago their love for Alexa changed with an alarming phone call. "The person on the other line said, 'unplug your Alexa devices right now,'" she said. "'You're being hacked.'"

That person was one of her husband's employees, calling from Seattle.

"We unplugged all of them and he proceeded to tell us that he had received audio files of recordings from inside our house," she said. "At first, my husband was, like, 'no you didn't!' And the (recipient of the message) said 'You sat there talking about hardwood floors.' And we said, 'oh gosh, you really did hear us.'"

Danielle listened to the conversation when it was sent back to her, and she couldn't believe someone 176 miles away heard it too....

...Danielle says she unplugged all the devices, and she repeatedly called Amazon. She says an Alexa engineer investigated.

"They said 'our engineers went through your logs, and they saw exactly what you told us, they saw exactly what you said happened, and we're sorry.' He apologized like 15 times in a matter of 30 minutes and he said we really appreciate you bringing this to our attention, this is something we need to fix!"

But Danielle says the engineer did not provide specifics about why it happened, or if it's a widespread issue....

Everyone is freaked out about the NSA/CIA/FBI spying on all of us, and rightfully so. However, there are several new players at the table. Now we have to worry about Google/Amazon/Facebook and many others who also want to know everything about us for totally different reasons. Everybody is a spy these days. And no one is immune from it.

Oh yeah.  They'll "fix" it all right.  They'll "fix" it so you will never know you've been recorded henceforth.

Well, @240B , all you have to do is unplug, and yes, you are immune.

Why anyone would willingly purchase "smart" products that spy on you under the guise of modern convince are insane.  Are you nuts trying to put the NSA, CIA and FBI out of work?

I wouldn't say immune. You can certainly take steps to lessen the exposure. I'm sure you have a phone. You certainly have a computer. You have electricity and pay taxes. You own property and a vehicle. Sorry my dude, but you are busted. You are officially on the grid. Less than others, but you're still there.

@Wingnut
Maybe it is my brilliantly misspent yoot... There was a time in my life when we regularly scanned our... ummm... clubhouse... for unknown RF sigs - and FOUND THEM a time or two. Having one foot on the other side of the tracks (red light district) most my life has left me plenty wary... Because I know precisely what it is like when the man decides to put his boot on my neck.

There is no way in hell I would voluntarily sanction a constant, uncontrolled mike on my premises. Especially for the very minute benefit it would provide. Ooh! it's magic when you can speak to your house and tell it to shut the light off in the bedroom... Or you can get up off your fat ass and go shut it off yourself. Chasing after this Star Trek bullcrap is bad, bad, bad for liberty. Just waiting on the first time an Alexa recording is used against a homeowner in court. Maybe that will wake folks up, but I doubt it.

There is an exception: As I have opined elsewhere, my new smartphone is almost useless to me without Google Assistant. I can't see the damn thing, and my huge fingers are better made for picks and shovels, and lariats and such. And so it goes.

Left to me, I was fine with a flip phone.  But it isn't left to me anymore.

I have said before @roamer_1 I would gladly return to using my Motorola Razr if there was a way to text with a one letter per key app.  It was the best phone.

@240B
YES, immune.

Quote
I'm sure you have a phone.

Sure. My landlines are controlled though... No chance they have an open mike... For anything that requires a secure connection, I have a VOIP in an encrypted tunnel. The smart phone is new for me and is the primary risk now, as defined in the last post I made here.

Quote
You certainly have a computer.

Actually, I have seven. And a tablet. And a smart phone. The desks do not have mike or cam until I physically plug them in. The laptops have the mike and cam disabled in software - at the driver level - until I poke the little gizmo that allows them again. I am not your average user.

Anything I have to do that I shouldn't on a computer is done on an untraceable Linux laptop with a mac addy spoofer from a coffee shop or hotel parking lot, or a random unprotected network somewhere around town. Never ever at home.

Yep. But my rigs are pre-computer and pre-satellite. Literally unable to track me. So in all seriousness, my grid footprint is comparable to something from the 1960's

As a matter of fact, I am working on that very thing right now. I will run my business from this cabin here near town. But I will soon be living off grid... with a twist. I will still be plugged into the web... but I defy anyone to unravel how - For all intents and purposes, it will look like I am operating from here. I won't say anymore than that.

Since the time Alexa was released I have been adamantly opposed to having it or any similar device in my home. They’re not eavesdropping, sure. Any time I shared that fear I was looked at as if I was a wacky conspiracy theorist. Now there’s a story illustrating precisely why my adamant opposition was justified and why it won’t change.

A young Portland couple whose home was outfitted with a full complement of Alexa devices received a phone call from one of the husband’s employees (who lives in Seattle) that changed their view on the intrusive technology. After an unsatisfactory resolution from Amazon, Danielle shared her story with local news station KIRO . . .

Every room in their home was connected to Alexa, from which the couple controlled the home’s lights, heat, and security system. Danielle told the news station:

“‘My husband and I would randomly joke and say, I’d bet these devices are listening to what we’re saying.’

“But…two weeks ago their love for Alexa changed with an alarming phone call. ‘The person on the other line said, ‘unplug your Alexa devices right now,’ she said. ‘You’re being hacked' . . .

“That person was one of her husband’s employees, calling from Seattle.

“‘We unplugged all of them and he proceeded to tell us that he had received audio files of recordings from inside our house,’ she said. ‘At first, my husband was, like, ‘no you didn’t!’ And she said ,’You sat there talking about hardwood floors.’ And we said, ‘oh gosh, you really did hear us.’

“The employee, 176 miles away, received the recording out of the blue" . . .

. . . Are there hundreds or thousands or millions of Alexa devices out there either capable of the same thing or already doing the same thing, unbeknownst to their owners? That isn’t out of the realm of possibility and, if Amazon knows about it, they’re probably keeping an extremely tight lid on it while they scramble to find an acceptable fix.

People across the political spectrum vigorously fight for their privacy in the face of laws like the Patriot Act, yet willingly invite a device they know is listening to every word (how else does it know when to turn on?) into their home, sometimes into each room of their home. How gullible are we? . . .

Scary. My step-daughter has Alexa in her home.  While not inherently evil, this story delineates how possibly scary it can be with people you don't want to be listening in, listening in on intimate conversations.
The wife and I can do quite well without Alexa.

This Woman’s Amazon Alexa Experience Will Leave You With Chills!

Did an Echo Call 911 During a Domestic Assault? Amazon Says No.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/11/business/amazon-echo-911-emergency.html

It would be an interesting experiment to get near it and yell very loudly, "I'm going to kill you!" have someone scream, and then fire a shot or two. Just to see what it would do.

I guess a lot of these devices are great for some, but personally, I have no need.

A friend of mine has Alexa or something.  She showed it to me all excited and demonstrated how it can dial my phone number just by voice command.  I don't think she liked it when I said that was for lazy people.  I mean, what's so hard about just picking up your phone and dialing it yourself?

Sometimes, I think we have too much technology for our own good.  And it's causing us some real problems.  Might even kill us one day.

Marketing has sure changed.
The next stunt will be a camera in your bathroom peeking to see what toilet paper you use.
(cameras in the room freshener? who knows)

Good thing I won't let Alexa or her ilk into my house. I squeezed the Charmin the other day.
