Albertsons in San Diego faces suit over no-Spanish language policy

A grocery store in San Diego allegedly subjected Hispanic employees to harassment and a hostile work environment by implementing a no-Spanish language policy, federal officials said Thursday.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit alleging store managers at Albertsons publicly reprimanded Hispanic employees who were caught speaking Spanish. The workers were barred from speaking Spanish around non-Spanish speakers, even during breaks or when talking to Spanish-speaking customers, the lawsuit said.

No action was taken despite employee complaints, causing some workers to transfer to other stores, according to the EEOC.

If this is just one store,  so what, really.

How interesting!  A lawsuit challenging a store for speaking the native language - English.  Go to Montreal and see how concerned they are if you don't speak French.  I think the real issue is forcing interpreters on all stores and financially ruining them.  If the courts hold stores must have interpreters, it will be a rejection of a store's rights to run things the way the see fit, and if a store is required by  the courts to have one interpreter, they will need 15-20 to take care of everyone.
