Paris burns as rioters attack buildings, torch vehicles and loot McDonald's: French capital sees some of the worst May Day madness as protests erupt around the world

Workers in several different countries took to the streets to march for the rights of labourers around the world
Demonstrators in Paris, France, destroyed shops and threw rocks at police who responded with tear gas
Protests in Istanbul, Turkey, took an ugly turn as demonstrators clashed with armoured riot police officers
Workers in Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Cambodia, Russia and even England also held celebrations of the day

Protest marches have been held around the world to mark International Workers' Day, and while some remained peaceful parades, others escalated into violent clashes and destruction.

In Paris, which often sees large demonstrations on May 1, protesters attacked a McDonald's restaurant with petrol bombs and looted the fast food restaurant.

Pictures from inside the franchise shows protesters helping themselves to drinks, throwing food on the floor and breaking cash register.

I can't get too worked up over that.

On the other hand, had it been a What-a-burger..............

The only time I've ever been in Paris, I was tear gassed just walking down the street.

Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

Apparently, they need more common sense, efficacious laws against petrol bombs.

I guess they could register, and take out insurance on their gas cans.

My father was there during the riots, too, @musiclady ! As a TV exec, he had been a guest of the French tourism office. After seeing the lovely sites of the Loire, etc., the group came back to Paris to find rioting in the streets. My father saw a news story in it (which he transmitted to his station), and asked one of the rioters what they were trying to achieve. The response was pretty much je ne sais quois. They just wanted to burn and break stuff.

Chaotic images of rioting, violence and looting were posted to social media from all over the globe on Tuesday as anarchists celebrated May Day, or International Workers’ Day.

Violence broke out in France, Sweden, Honduras, Greece, Turkey and many other places as police clashed with the anarchists.  ...

As a Swede, I am continually offended by the usurpation of May Day by communists and anarchists.

It was an innocent Nordic custom when my grandparents immigrated.

Appears the rioters were looking for a reason to riot.

Your experience was nothing compared to mine. I was in my early 40s and told to leave a Paris hotel lobby as they thought my friend and I were prostitutes.  :thud:

May 1 should actually be used as a holiday to commemorate all of the victims of communism/socialism, one of the deadliest ideologies of all time.

Oh, dear.  Yes.  The teargas doesn't compare with that!

McDonald's IMHO, is only popular because it is fast, something What-a-burger never has been, as they are cook-to-order.
Some parts on the country are impatient, and wouldn't wait for a What-a-burger.
It's a shame, they'd rather eat the clown burgers just because they are faster.

Ouch, I must have hit a nerve! You just can't beat In-N-Out for a burger, period. McDonald's isn't what it used to be, hasn't been for decades and Whataburger is still just a regional competitor :pondering:

In-and-Out is fine.
I'll eat a good burger anywhere, it's just that McDonald doesn't qualify as a good burger.

The French, known for there culinary expertise, proved my point, by burning one down.

That would be cultural appropriation.
